2.2 stands for engine displacement as well as 1.8 or 1.6 or 2.0 or 1.5 or 5.0 or 3.0 or what ever you have. Usually followed with an L to stand for liter or CCs to stand for cubic centimeter or simply put the engine size. VTEC stands for variable valve timing and lift electronic controled. As for how it works, google is your friend. You drive an automatic the same way you drive any other automatic. How it engages, google is your friend.

I believe that Nissan is the only company that has a variable valve timing that is depending on the amount of acceleration. Other than that it should engage even if your 3/4 throttle at the same point.
