Please HELP with tach problem
My sons 90 Lude si 2.0 .. When the car is started it idles fine runs great
but when I hit about 3000 RPM's the Tach starts jumping around. The car
also starts jerking. It does't seem to do it at lower RPM's. I have also had a
couple of days when the tach jumped a couple times without the jerking.
I just put in a crate motor. New belts, and water hoses. I used our old Fuel
injection, EGR, Exst Manafold, and Alt.. I have the Dist from the crate with a new
cap and rotor. First Honda I ever worked on. I was pretty happy until the Tach problem. This is the only thing that is messed up.
I took it in to be looked at, but it didn't act up for the mechanic.
Please Help

I, too, am experiencing tach problems. It has become very frustrating since I am now sucking through gas like crazy! I noticed that it will rev up to about 3000-3500 rpms even when I am driving on freeway! I hadn't really noticed until I had to come down a mountain and rode my brakes down the entire way. They got pretty hot and smelly. Near the bottom, the road starts to coast up and down. I never did have to hit the gas for about 4 miles, even going on the slight uphills.
I need help resolving this. Have taken it to three different places, spent about $1600 trying to pin this down. Closest I have come is having the AIC valves (I think that's what he said) switched. Tach problem solved, but then got a check engine light. Any suggestions??

Hi Clevie,
I took it into the shop about a week ago. Not Honda, but a local place I used a few times. The check Engine light was comming up on me as well. I got the car back and the light was off, but after about 14 miles the darn thing turns on again.
They whent through the car and cleaned all the sensor plugs.. It helped some I guess. I still have the tach problem with the jerking problem. If I speed up it goes away. If I slow way down It goes away. Middle of the road speed and it jerks like
a mother with the screwy tach thing. They did a diagnostics withe the computer
and said I did a great job.. I guess they were wrong..

You Know, I didn't ask what code they used. I think It was because I wouldn't know what they were talking about if they told me. This is the first engine I ever messed with. I did it myself because my wife told me I couldn't... You know how that goes...I guess I had to prove I could.
So I Have this Tach problem and the Jerky Jerky that goes along with it.
I have done some searching around this site and found alot of people have had a jumpy tach. No one mentions the Jerk, But I do have the distributer from the engine I replaced. It seems by my reading that the distributer could be playing a role in the Tach dance.
How hard is it to replace the distributer? Does it just pull out after you take the
bolts out? Or is it a major pain?

Ok, I tought I would come back and tell you what the problem was with the car.
The problem got worse after a couple days. The car would start to die. It was hard to get started again. I changed the distributor and that didn't do a thing.
It turns out it was a ground cable that connects to the Thermostat housing.
Right next to the bleed nut for the cooling system. The screw holding it in was loose.
I hope this helps someone else out..
Thanks
