thicker oil takes longer to break down in freezing weather. Which means the engine has to work harder to break down the oil and lube all the parts. That's why the car manual recommends 5w-30 for newer engines. It's not thick and breaks down faster, which means less stress on the engine.
but since you're in TX, 10w-30 is fine. You'll never see -30 down there.
