Hey guys quick question. I just got a motor back from the machine shop. The oil pump that he got in a kit has an o ring on the back that is different from the one that came on the car. h22a4 by the way. it is the small o ring on the left side of the pump if you are looking at it. I picked one up from honda today and the same o ring is different than the original pump off the motor (identical to the one in the kit). The o rings that were in the engine rebuild kit are too big to fit in pump. Has anyone ran into this before. . . i will take pics and post tommorrow.

no . . . the oil pump off the block was and the pump i picked up from the dealer ship was. The aftermarket pump he got and the one i got from honda look identical. Neither one match the one off the motor. The only difference is that o-ring that i can't figure out.

damn didn't mean to make the pics that big. You cant really tell the size difference in the pictures. the o ring out of the old one isn't even close to going into the new pump (not that i was going to reuse it) the one that came in the kit is wrong. that o ring was the only one not included with the pump.

i ran into the same question the other day. the gasket i had was just a tiny bit too big for that groove. i just made sure it was in there enough to hold it in place and tightened it down

i took both pumps to honda today and showed the parts guy. he looked into it and he said that it didn't show two different pumps. He placed an order for the o-ring. it will be in tomorrow. i'll post to let everyone know if it was the right one.

98vtec, this is the problem i told you about while you were assembling your motor. which is why i asked you if your opil pump had this oring and asked if you could take a pic of the back of the pump for me. but you ignored my question and never responded to me

</TD></TR></TABLE>big mistake on your part. i too did the same thing once and later found that o ring torn and shreded after taking the motor back apart.
i have been telling people about this problem for a while now but nobody seems to care or even bother to listen to me. anyone who has built a motor in the last few years has this same problem w/ their BRAND NEW OEM HONDA PUMP but only a few even relize it.
if you havent built a few h motors you probably dont even notice that your new oem oil pump doesnt come w/ this oring. new pumps come w/ all the seals/orings you need (they always have) or at least they are supposed to. but sometime a few years ago honda made a mistake in production and began machining that groove too small. so now when you buy a new pump, it doesnt come w/ an oring because they no longer fit in the groove.
i have purchased o rings seperately from honda for this and they were the same old size oring that still didnt fit in the groove. the parts guys are absolutely clueless and i have yet to get a straight answer from anyone at honda. so i had to make my own fix on several engines since.
you probably wont be able to find an oring this size, or atleast i was unable to and believe me i searched everywhere. so you have a couple choices. you can either use an exacto knife or razor blade and trim down the oring to fit which will involve trimming the inner dia. of the oring. OR you can use a dremel to open up the groove enough to allow the oring to fit properly. whatever you do, DO NOT just shove the oring in place and throw some hondabond on it and install the pump. believe me i did it this way tyhe first time and later found the oring torn due to it squishing out of the groove while tightening down the pump. it gets cut apart on the sharp edges of the aluminum pump/block.
as far as i know honda still has not resolved this issue. i ran into this problem on the last new pump i saw which was about 2 years ago and i had this problem on several new pumps i purchased a year or two prior to that. so this issue dates back at least 3-4 years as far as i have seen.
well i know for a fact that it didnt tear the oring, just squished the outer edge. i had to take the pump off, for some other reason, i dont remember why but the ring was still in tact the outer edge was just compressed.
You guys might be interested in knowing that Honda doesn't even list that o-ring for the 55mm motors.

OP: I'd think a machine shop would be able to open that groove a little, cleanly and easily.

*update*
honda's o ring was WRONG.
Oriellys had a felpro o ring box in the back. #011 fit perfectly in the grove. and according to the inside label on the box it is ok for heat, oil, antifreeze.

btw. . . # 31 in the part diagram is the o ring... (its the wrong size for a new pump though)

Yes it's there in the diagram. Now go down the page and see if #31 is listed.
