So I just put a deposit down on an '88 Prelude SI. The owner told me that the engine was replaced by the owner before him and didn't know what year it was or what kind. It is pretty fast though. It is a DOHC. I want to know how to ID the engine. I looked up what engines came in my car, but don't know if I have a JDM, USDM or EDM and there are like 6-8 different ones.

It also smokes at idle, but not when driving. Seems like valve seals to me, but I've been reading about the rings going. How can I tell between valves or rings?
