new engine
Where is the best place to purchase a reliable, low-mileage H22a (either JDM or USDM)? Also what modifications are needed to run a JDM engine as opposed to just dropping in a USDM? Does the JDM Type-S tranny have closer gear ratios? Thanks.

You will want to keep the US-spec fuel rail & ignition system, as well as the ECU.
the type-S has a very durable tranny, but the gears are longer. a type S motor has 220hp and the package is over $5,000
5% of imported H22A1's have LSD. If you are lucky, they will have one.
$2600 for a open DIff, full swap
$2900 for a LSD, full swap

If you are buying a US motor from a wreck, make sure you get the VIN of the donor car and run it through Carfax. Carfax will give you the milage of the car when the salvage title was issued. This is the only way to verify the milage on a motor.
If you are buying an import motor, good luck. You have no way to tell the milage, and you are at the mercy of whatever the importer tells you.
Same thing goes for the S-spec motor/tranny. AFAIK, there is no way to tell if the motor you have is the S-Spec version from the outside... (Well, other than the red valve cover whick is simple to swap...)

the type S engine has a blue valve cover. Also, if you are lucky, it will have the type S headers on it, which I think look slightly different (not sure how though)
