All the ones I have seen require removing the needles, however I would strongly caution you against it. I've seen and heard of countless failed attempts, needles sticking or simply no longer working at all. Unless you have a spare guage cluster to replace your current one, I wouldn't attempt it. I started to install a set of guage faces in my last 5th gen, but once I had everything apart and realized what had to be done, I aborted.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but very difficult. I have a set installed in my current 5th gen, but they were not put in by me. To date, I haven't known anyone to do it without some kind of problems(minor or major), other than the person who did mine.

Ok i did this today....DO NOT TAKE THE NEEDLES OFF!! They will go on without them being taken off..You just have to slide it over the big needle first then over the small one. Youll get it its easy when you see how to do it. All you have to keep in mind is mark where your gas needle is and make shure to put it back where it was . I just filled up my tank all the way first.
