Because vtec is disabled when the motor is not within normal operating temperature range. Always let your car warm up before ******* the **** out of it. 65% of all engine wear occurs during start up.

engine was at full temp, it only sat for about 10 min. and i hit it earlier today at only about 1/2 throttle if that means anything
Your car may be going into whats called "Limp mode" It happens to some peoples cars. Sometimes it last awhile and others, not very long. It happened to my car whenever I had it, and it lasted for about a month.

Variable valve time is engaged in the h22a by oil pressure. If your v-tec is not engaging it probably means your v-tec selanoid filter screen is clogged or you burned off to much oil and your oil doesnt achieve the pressure neccessary to push the dowel pins which activate the larger rocker arms and all that jazz. Arent honda great. I like the i-vtec. Ran off the computer instead of completely off oil pressure.

If most of the engine wear occurrs at start up, how long do you let it warm up? I have an h23. I usually let it warm up to one bar, then start drving and go past 3k only after I get the second bar.
I'm having the same problem with my VTEC. The oil level is good. How do I clean the VTEC solinoid? I don't have CEL neither. I could rev it to 8200 rpm with no problem.
Dude check your oil level. I had the same problem and when i checked the oil i had almost nothing in it...Changed and filled it up and vuala (however the hell you spell it) It worked... I talked to my honda-techy and he told me the computer will automatically shut down VTEC if the oil level is too low...
oops...
oops...
CLEANING THE SOLENOID WILL ONLY HELP FOR ABOUT A WEEK IF U HAVENT FIXED THIS PROBLEM U NEED TO BUY A NEW PRESSURE SWITCH OR GET THE VALVE TIMING ADJUSTED TRY THE TIMING FIRST ACAUSE THE SWITCH IS ABOUT 250
it doesnt mean that your switch is bad. Mine does it as well...they all do. When your car moves around, the oil sloshes around inside the oil pan, constantly changing pickup fromt he oil pickup...this will effect oil pressure. I agree prelude1897...vtec does have a limp mode. Some times it is strong, sometimes weak, it is just how it is. It doesnt mean anything is wrong. If you are reving past 6200 rpms when you think it isnt working, it is working indeed. If vtec isnt not engaging, the engine will not rev past 6200-6500rpms. So if you are getting past that, it is working... it is just quiet. So if anything is wrong with actual VTEC system, it will run like an H23 and the rev limiter will hit at 6500rpm. Dont worry, more than likely, nothings wrong. Tell us how it runs tomorrow.
