Let's talk Flywheels!
ok i just bought an m2b4 tranny but i still have a few more things on my list... first off has anyone (and i know this has been talked about before) run a hyper clutch? like the one seen on JDMsh*t!? how do you like it? both for daily and spirited driving? would this clutch be suitable on an N/A SCCA racer? or would i need something stronger? i would like a sprung clutch because it gives me the ability to drive a little "smoother" you know? next up are flywheels, i dont think i need anything extreme like an 8lbi think i would rather have a 11lb, keep in mind mostly a streetcar, but for those of you who know everything about h22s please give me the pros and cons so i can make a better decision. also on the subject of flywheels, what kind of material should i look into? any specific manufactures? thanks guys!
EDIT: the tranny i bought is dirtys hell what would the best method for cleaning it?

i had a fidanza lightened flywheel, and that thing gave me tons of headaches. granted the car was fast as hell off the line, but after sprying a 75 shot, the bolts to it backed out and i had to pull the tranny 2 separate times. i even had the red loctite on it. my guess on why it backed out is because aluminum expands when it is heated as opposed to steel which compresses. other than that who, knows... my stock one is back in and no problems..
I've got the Fidanza ultra-light (8.5lb) and I've had no problems with it. You get used to controling the revs in about 2.2 seconds and anyone racing SCCA is bound to have knowledge of heel-toe and rev matching so you'll never have to worry about "losing revs" between shifts. I always rev match and it probably took me a day to get used to how hard I had to push the gas to get the engine where I wanted it. Now that I'm used to it I'd never go back to a stock flywheel. You'll love it believe me.

How long have you been using your Fidanza flywheel?

I also run the fidanza flywheel (8.8lbs) and its great, I've had no problems whatsoever, I didn't even kill the car once after it was installed. The revs dropping faster is not that big of a deal, car revs much more freely. If you're wanting one and have the money I'd go with it if you auto-x. Oh yeah I've been using it with the act hd/ss in my 4th gen vtec for about 6 months/8k miles.

I've had problems with the flywheel warping... I've seen it happen to a few of the prelude owners in my area, that's why I am against alumium flywheels

the ring gear came loose from my Clutchmasters 8lb flywheel. you might want to just get a lightened stock flywheel.
for cleaning it, it's going to get dirty again, but you can use carb cleaner.

EVERYTHING expands when it gets hot, even steel. It just doesn't expand as much as aluminum.

I have the same clutchmasters. I haven't had any problems for 2 years FWIW

I ran a Unorthodox Racing 9 lb (you can only get them in 10 lb from them now) back in the day. No probelms out of it till it got stolen.
I also used an ACT Xtreme PP and 6 puck disk. Horrible for street driving.
Held all the power and abuse I could throw at it though.

I have had my Fidanza for over 3 years now, and I can say that it is GREAT! I had a slight grinding (when starting)problem with it, but called them to ask talk to them about it, and guess what? They overnited me a brand new one.
They were really nice to deal with too. They ended up getting Tom Fidanza on the phone, and he was incrediblely knowledgeable. He explained exactly what had happend, and apologized for the inconvinence. Had the new one for quite a bit now and NO problems. When I last pulled my motor, I checked all the bolts again and everything was still tightened to spec. You are suppose to loctite the main bolts on fyi. also clutchmaster = fidanaza just rebaged

I've had a Jun chromoly flywheel 2 years, no problems. I've seen drag cars with prelude engines cause warping on aluminum flywheels. Thats why I paid more for chromoly. It won't warp like aluminum.

Now that it is time to change out my clutch again, I plan on try the Jun chormoly one.... Hopefully I don't have any problems out of it!

same thing except for street performance clutch, never had a problem.

Chromoly is your best otion when it coems to light weight flywheels. More resistant to warping. The only ones I've seen available is the JUN and now ACT has chromoly flywheels out for the Prelude as well.

i figured out what was wrong with the flywheel, the ring gear had about a .0015" gap around a third of the wheel which allowed it to flex and vibrate on startups. since clutchmasters only uses 3 screws with washers to hold the ring gear in place it wore away at the washers over the past 15 months that i've had it. it literally sheared away a third of each washer that holds it in place.
