Default Installing CamGear : Quick Question

Gonna be putting on some camgears this weekend and i just want to make sure that i will be able to loosen / torque down the cam gear bolt with out having the cam gear rotate. Does it need to be held from rotating like the crankshaft pulley? If so, what are some methods i can use.

There are special tools for DOHC engines to hold cam gears in place.

Hmmm, the reason i ask is because it doesnt state anything in my helms about holding the camgears from rotating, but its only right that they will move when you go to tighten them. Can anyone confirm that you need or not need to hold the camshafts in place while removing/installing the gears?

I know about those, what im saying is that when i go to re-install the gears i have to torque them down to 37ftlbs. Now, if the gears rotate as im trying to tighten them, i wont be able to acomplish this. Much like the crankshaft pulley. It has to be held from rotating in order to torque. Or will 37ftlbs not be enought torque to rotate the whole timming assembly (Crank, and gears), i should be fine if that is the case.

Well you can move them by hand, if you've ever had to adjust them when changing out a timing belt you already know this, so why wouldn't they move if you torque on em with a ratchet?

I don't know if you know this or not, put there are 5mm holes, one above each cam, on the cam holders, next to the cam gears. You can put a 5mm anything, allen wrench is pretty good, in the hole, and that will help hold the cam still....make sure it goes through the hole in the cam, though...

stick a screw driver through the gear, with the tip laying on the head. i would think that would hold it in place.

Ohh ok, what you can do is tighten them down as far as you can. Reinstall the timming belt, have someone hold the crank pulley has you torque the cam bolt to spec.
