imobolizer system
i have a 2001 prelude and just recently my transponder key isn't starting my car everytime. i was wondering if any else ever came across this problem before. i would turn the key over and nothing would happen. then i would turn the key off and try again for about the third time the car would start. has there every been like an TSB or a recall on anything like this. just wondering b/c i don't wanna get stuck somewhere b/c my stupid key wont start the car.
thanks in advance

Perhaps try getting your key re-coded???
Im not too sure with transponders built into the key but we used to have trouble with the keyless entry/immobiliser type where people would try to start their car without pressing the button for the immobiliser, after doing this many times it from what i remember triggered an oxygen sensor code and crank angle sensor code? on the cpu and caused there immobiliser to intermittently not turn off when pressing the button. this was easy to fix and just needed the codes cleared. Might be similar?
Or then perhaps if you drop ur keys alot you might of damaged the crystal in the key??

There has been a recall on for faulty ignition switches in the past, and I think it still applies ? Certainly sounds like that's your problem, if you get it to them they will fit you a new ignition for FREE.
It is a recall on safety grounds as one of the symptoms also included cutting off at random times, in traffic or overtaking

Yeah, the dealer should fix the problem regardless, it's a safety recall.
About the keyless entress, did you change the battery?

the red light still lights up that means the battery still has power right?

The amount of power needed to light up the LED on remote fobs is VERY small, and even though it glows there's not always enough higher power needed to actually transmit any signal, so best swap the battery in the remote and I think you will find it works. If it's standard fob they take a circular Lithium CR03 type battery and are quite cheap, I replace mine at first sign of it getting weak, like having to get nearer to the car in order to make it function.

The contact points with the lithium battery touches the circuit board and the side contacts that touch the side of the battery... sand them shiny with 600~1000 grit sand paper.
Also, remotes that use lithium batteries, on the side battery clips, the solder joints tend to break off the circuit board. Turn the circuit board over and carefully look to see if the solder is cracked.

that thing looks beat up, how many times have you dropped it?
didn't the dealer give you a spare remote when you bought the car?
test and trouble shoot my friend.

Yes, it is not the battery. Try twisting the remote gently as you push the button. If you find a sweet spot, you have solder cracks in the remote (happens when the remote is on too many keys in your pocket).
All you have to do is pull it open and find the crack in the solder (very minute crack) and solder it with a $9 20W solder PEN (not the gun or say bye bye). This will fix your proplem.
By the way, nice thread Hijack

Take that remote apart and look at the solder joints. It might be a double sided circuit board then the solder joints will be on the same side as the parts.
