Default Ignition Column problem

Parked the car and took the key out and the chime noise for when you leave the key in the ignition and open the door was going off. Now I cannot lock my doors before I step out of the car with the lock switch.

How would I go about fixing this? The key still stays in the ignition column when I fire her up. Its just that when I take the key out, it thinks it is still in there when I open the door.

Mine used to do the same thing. Bang very hard on the underside of the steering column until you hear a metal click. The bottom part of your palm works very nicely. Once you get the technique down, one good hit should do it.
