You need to remove the 32mm spindle nut and lower ball joint, then zip tie the hub assembly out of the way. then take a large screwdriver or crowbar and get some leverage between the tranny housing and the cv shaft and give it a good tug. be carefull not to seperate the axle from the cv joint.

I am almost positive it is a 36mm nut on the end of the axle. at least it is on the 4th gen.
to loosen the nut either take off the center cap on your wheel and loosen it will the car is on the ground with a breaker bar. or put it in 5th gear and hold the breaks hardcore as someone tries to break the nut loose. or a good impact gun works wonders.
the lower ball joint is somewhat difficult the first time you do the job. you will understand after the first time. You are going to want to put pressure on pushing the hub up and the lower control arm down. and then hit one of the nubs that are on the lower control arm. once you understand how to do it its simple and can be repeated easily.
you can use a ball joint puller (might no work), or a pickle fork (will rip boot).

take off the lower shock bolt. and now pry the axle out from the tranny.

yep 36mm, break it loose before jacking it up(if you not using air tools)

i never pry out axles, i usually tap with a rubber mallet while pulling and the axle eases itself out.
and, don't be surprised if your axle nut is notched, making it harder to break torque on the nut. I went through 2 craftsman 24" breaker bars tryign to get the thing loose, then tried my electric impact and had it off in 2 seconds.
you also need to rent an axle puller from your local parts store to separate the axle from the hub.

yea axle nut is a bith to get off without a gun. and its a monster, 36mm. i got my axles off with a tuner fork. if u got a SH the driver side axle will b a bitch to get off cuz a small piece stays in the ATTS. AND BE CAREFUL NOT TO MESS UP THE BEARINGS!!. have patience.

well i wonder what the poster is doing, when i pulled my motor and when i changed my clutch i have a way that i can pop the exles out and keep them out of the way without breaking the lower ball joint or removing the bitch tight spindle nut bolt

did mine tonight in about 30 minutes. it was a snap, 2 bolts and the spindle nut, out comes the axle
