high miles
I am looking into buying a Prelude. I am thinking a '97 or '98 model. Only ones I can find around here though have very high miles (85K-100+K) and I was curious to know how big of an issue this could be. Considering it's a Honda and all, I didn't know if this would be a problem or not.
How many miles do Preludes usually have when they start having major mechanical issues?

It all depends on the previous owner of the vehicle.
If you do find a prelude, take it to your local honda dealership and have them inspect the car for you. Make sure to check to see if the cars were serviced at the 60k or 90k mile intervals and what was done.

That's what I was trying to figure out! If it was really going to be that big of an issue. I wouldn't go buy a Camaro with 90K miles on it, it'd start breaking down at 120K!

the issues i've had so far are:
distributor died around 115k
stripped 2nd gear around 148k
a/c kept going out on me but i'm not sure if it's related to reliability or the fact the car has been in wrecks before...but the a/c compressor is sitting in my garage now so it's not an issue anymore.
also, my car is a '92 and you said you're looking at '97-'98, hopefully those won't have issues with the a/c.

In general, high miles will always be an issue on any car, though I would think they are less so on a Honda than other brands of cars. As a previous poster said, it all depends on how the car was driven.
In terms of any issues relating to 97-98 preludes, I heard about bad SS (i.e. auto) transmissions which caused the warranty for those trannys to be extended to 100K miles. Extended warranty or not, I would stay away from those.

my accord had 145 when I sold it and was running like a champ and my Prelude has 150k (ish) and its runnig like a champ too. A guy I knew had 236k on it before it started to go shitty. Then he swapped for an H22a.

I've got a 1992 Si4ws with 145K on the chassis and 50K+ on the JDM H22a, with the swapped motor because i'm an idiot, The car or the new motor has had no major issues whatsoever.... and runs just fine.

my 93 has 208,000 miles...havent had any engine problems what so ever, except replacing head gasket and a seal. normal wear and tear. changed 1 CV joint at about 195,000 and the other one at 208,000 miles. and the rack and pinion also at 208,000. my baby is still running hard.

130k on mine, no problems, runs like a champ. beyond the normal maintence the only thing i had crap out on me was the slave cylinder for the clutch. not a major problem, maybe 1 hour and $50 in parts to fix.

my old prelude was a 92 si with 204k miles on it. i knew the woman i bought it off of, she treated it like her baby. she didnt have to have anything replaced except for the normal stuff like timing belt.....regular mainenance crap......then after i had it, the oil pump went out.......then it was new engine time. hehehe

I was actually mistaken. It's the 2000-2001 auto (i.e. gimp ) preludes that have the shaky transmission. Here's the information from Honda's Owner page:

TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 20, 2002 - American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced today it will provide extended warranties on approximately 1.2 million Honda and Acura models equipped with automatic transmissions due to problems that may result in premature wear or failure. The extended warranty will cover affected transmissions for seven years or 100,000 miles.
The standard bumper-to-bumper warranty for Honda vehicles is three years or 36,000 miles, while Acura vehicles are covered for four years or 50,000 miles.

SS owners call it a "**** shift" and a "sport ****" for a reason.
chances are close to 50/50 that if you have an auto lude, the transmission is gonna fail before 100,000 mi. not all, but a LOT. why take that risk as a consumer if you don't have to, AND you get the faster version of the car?
if not knowing how to drive stick is giving you pause, spending 5,000 bucks on a unwarrantied tranny rebuilds gonna give you real fits...plus learning stick is really easy, and is the much better way to drive. all that "sucks in traffic" mumbo jumbo are from people that are too lazy to press a clutch now and then.

Well... I have a 98 5 speed manual with 68,000 miles and I have had the following problems;
Timing belt snapped
Hydrolic Auto Tensioner failure
o2 sensor failure
clutch master cyl leak
clutch slave cyl leak
The Drivers side window "pops" when going UP
Oil seems to "disapear"
Maybe My problem is, I DONT DRIVE IT HARD.
If you get one, drive it like you stole it... I did so with my CRX, and I got 287,000 before my 1st problem.
