header removal help!
#1, I just spent 15 minutes searching
OK that out of the way, I'm trying to remove my stock exhaust manifold on a 4th gen H22A1. I'm having a problem getting to the collector area to get those bolts that seem to hold the manifold to the collector. That area is way too small for me to fit a torque wrench in there...
Question 1: Does anyone have a picture of that area, that can tell me EXACTLY which bolts need to come out, and any tips on how to get into that area? I already have the bottom plastic shield out.
Question 2: The exhaust manifold seems to be held to the head by those pesky 8 12mm bolts, are these the only bolts that need to come off? There are these 2 strange square shape bolts right underneath the bottom 3 bolts on the head. Do these need to come off? It looks like there's a weld to the manifold or something strange I don't understand there.
Question 3: I have one bolt left on the head to get off, and I broke a socket wrench attachment trying to get it off. Any tips? I'm currently sprayin WD-40 all over it.
Thanks for the help, and please be specific.

The bolts on the head are relatively easy, but unless you have a pivot you cant get the socket all the way on the bottom right bolt cause of the heatshield on the alternator side. Use a 6pt socket and you should be able to get it though.
For the 3 bolts that connect the two pieces of the header, I use an extension and get them from the bottom. If you have longgg extensions you can get at least 2 of them from the top though.
The bolts on the cat are usually rusted, a breaker bar and some oomph will get those off though.

To get the bolts off of the cat...I had to use the Craftsman socket heads that are designed for stripped bolts. It wasn't too bad...because I was changing out my exhaust too. I pulled the cat-back off. Then I pulled the downpipe off with the cat. I had to use a breaker bar on the socket wrench and FINALLY the bolts came off.
However, I don't think I would have EVERY gotten it off if I hadn't pulled the exhaust system off the car.
Hope this helps. Good luck
