I've had the same problem.. Every once in a while my transmission decides to be stubborn and it won't got into Reverse, sometimes even 1st..

But it's never been a big deal.. Nothing that annoyed me that much.. Full fluid, nothing else wrong.. My clutch could be old though... Dunno how long it's been since it was replaced, I haven't I know..

Does it happen often enough to seem serious? Or just every once in a while it acts up?

Mine will do that too and if I let the clutch pedal out and push it in again it works fine. Probably just a quirk with the master and slave cylinders or the clutch itself.

5th gear syncro sleeve could be fubar. Very very common problem on 5th gens. I actually just had mine go on my 4th gen.

Naw. I replaced the sleeve and the gear. 180ish. you can probably get away with just replacing the sleeve, $90. Of course thats doing all the work yourself....

Really once you have the tranny off its easy work. gotta make sure you put everything back on in the right direction in the right order. Have a Helms. I had a friend with me to help so it wasn't bad at all.

Once the tranny is off it was petty easy...

sorry to bring up an old thread but i have the same problem with my 99 lude. every once in a while it will refuse to go into reverse. the clutch will be to the floor at a complete stop and it just wont let it go in. sometimes if i pull really hard it will push halfway in and grind. i just sit and shift through the other gears and wait a while then it will eventually decide to let me in.

i checked my fluid, the clutch is pretty new, i bled the system a few times to make sure that wasn't it. what the heck could be not letting it go into reverse but dosn't effect all the other gears?

I found if you roll the car forward (let off break or shift to second just to move a bit), and than go back to either 1st or reverse. It should go in after that.
