H22A with a problem...need help
I have an H22A that sounded like i broke the timing belt the other day. was driving, downshifted, went from 4K to 5K rpm when i heard a snap. engine immediately went dead, coasted to a stop. the sound it makes when i turn the key is the same as if the timing belt is broken and all i'm doing is spinning the crankshaft, but the belt is still tight. any ideas what it could be?
as far as i can tell, there's no teeth missing on the belt. i've pulled the valve cover and the upper timing belt cover. when i tried to turn the cam to cycle through the belt, it wouldn't move at all. the side of the belt on the back side of the block was tighter than the front, but not by too much. the belt actually looks clean and new, as far as i could tell the block has under 30K miles on it anyway. it's clean under the valve cover. nothing's wrong except the starter will spin without cranking the block. could i have broken a crank shaft or something? the ping or snap i heard right before the car shut off was almost exactly the same as hitting the rev limiter, but it popped at 4.8-5.1K instead of 8K. enough info for anyone to work with? i don't really want to strip the whole block down if i don't have to.
