flashing D4 light
Hi,
I just recently got my car back from honda cuz my car died and they changed the Rotor, and distrubutor cap. After spending $1200Cdn on it.. a week ago my boyfriend was driving it and he said the green D4 light was flashing and when he gassed it was revving but no power. He check fluids and everything was fine. He then shifted through the differnt gears and turned the car on and it was fine. I called Honda and told them it seems fine now but should i take it in.. they said if it does it again then bring it in. It was fine for a week until yesterday. Same thing happend as last week and it was fine for a while then while driving he was gassing it wasn't going anywhere so we pulled over and couldn't get the car started for an hour. Could Honda have not repaired the problem correctly the first time? and does this seem like a rotor/distributor cap problem? I do'nt know much about cars but I'm starting to not trust the mechanics at Honda. Please help..

Blinking D4 is a transmission problem. Don't have a manual handy, but it sounds like it's slipping badly or there is no fluid pressure.
If the fluid gets low, and you gas the car, it will overrev and refuse to change gears. But you say it wouldn't start for an hour? Don't know about that.
Recheck the tranny fluid level. Warm up the car slightly, shift through all the gears, and then check it. Note the color and the smell.
It sounds like you have more than one problem.

Thanks Jagan '92. I checked the tranny fluid and it's red and the level is fine. It does say in my manual that when then D4 light blinks it's a transmition problem but i've been looking around on forums and a lot of people with the same problem (mostly with Accords for some reason) say it's the vss sensor or Main relays? I took it to Honda on Oct 19th for a very simmilar problem...i asked if it could be the same thing and he said no. It's funny how everytime i take my car to Honda i'll have it for a month then something else would go wrong.. not to mention when i got my car back the last time , they did wash it but it had scratches.. probably from rocks on the sponge they washed it with.
Ok, I remember once when my main relay was going out, I would try to start the car and the D4 light would blink... but never have I been driving and had something like that happen.
Search for main relay in the prelude archives and go ahead and pull yours out and resolder it if you like - that will at least knock that out of the picture (and maybe solve a problem).
Also, do you have a 4th gen? I assume you do. Describe more what happens when you "rev it with no power".

mine is a 93 SR. When I first started my car the green D4 light flashed so i went through all the gears, turned the car off and tried again and it worked.. maybe 5 mins later while driving,i'm gassing and the spedometer drops, i can feel loss of power..I can't remember if anything was flashing on the dash... i pull over and turn off the engine. went through all the gears again and it was fine till the next time i started it.. That's when it would'nt start for an hour...
i'll keep checkin the forums..

Yeah it was raining and very cold...just a question.. this might be a stupid one but, when i take it to honda will they actually tell me the code? how much do they usually charge for it?
Thanks
Thanks
I doubt they will tell you the code unless you specifically ask for it - and I bet they will charge 80$ to "diagnose" the code.
You know where the service connector is, right? Just short the connector pins, and see if you get a code. Then you can post the code here, or send it to Chase as he seems to have more information. Hope all this helps.
