Default Evap system question

Does the evap system actually prevent loss of fuel from evaporation, or simply put it back into the intake manifold for emission purposes?

The evap system, releases the pressure from the gas tank. Takes the gas fumes that builds up in the tank, and instead of releaseing them into the atmospere they are directed to the intake manifold for burning.

Ohh By the way, if your Evap system is not working properly(not venting the fumes) it can cause the engine to run rich..Mine is not venting the fumes, I have to leave the gas cap half on. If I dont my car runs like poopie.

I was thinking about getting rid of the whole system with the cansiter and what not, and just letting the gas vent out the back of the car. I'm trying to simplify everything under the hood and make as much room as possible.
