engine hydrolocked!!?? what to do
ok, it rained pretty heavy for about 15 minutes today in yonkers, ny and I was caught in the middle of it... making a right turn down a hill... I got caught unexpectadly at a large puddle of water (about 1 foot standing water at the least).. and I couldn't go back up, there was a bunch of cars behind me, so I tried to go through knowing well what could happen.. because i have a cold air intake and no bypass valve... which i never thought i would need.. so i go through.. and the car dies... I checked the filter and it was soaked.. so I thought maybe if I just let it dry off .. it wont be so bad and will start up. Tried starting it a few times and nothing.. absolutely no response from the engine, all i hear is the battery and alternator??? but no clicking and no attempts at it trying to crank. I wait more and more.. and nothing.. still the same. So I take the cold air intake apart and find a lot of water... in the pipe... :-\ .. i then proceed to check the motor oil.. but that seemed to be fine?? unless i'm wrong b/c it was kinda dark... and last but not least.. i check the coolant and see that it's kinda chunky and nasty looking...
So what happened? Do you guys think it will start up tomorrow morning maybe?
Or maybe if all the fluids are flushed and refilled??
Or is it.. that my... beautiful.. 188k mileage h23 is now dead??
If so.. I have about 4k in the bank... what can I do for that much? i dont wanna put a stock engine back in, and i've always dreamt of a turbo-charged h23 or h22, but i would need to know where to get it and who would install it nicely in nyc area?
Thanks in advance

4000? Hmm....but a really nice h22 - for about 1200 - before you put the engine in, build it.........sleeved and everything........for about 2000(w/out head work).........
Piece together your own kit.......change is for the better - or you can buy another h23 and boost that.......

over here, insurance cover hydro-locked engines.
Flood damage, or nature caused....etc...good luck sorry to hear about the hydro screw.

if you ahve full coverage insureance the engine is probably covered.
i have recovered multiple engines like that though.
first take the spark plugs out and try and turn it over. if you are lucky water will shoot out of the sparkplug holes and you will just need to dry it out, change the oil a few times and put new plugs in and drive away.
worst case you got bent rods and will need a new engione or will need to repalce the damaged rods.

You should have tried to get the water out ASAP after hydrolocking.
Once you know it's hydrolocked, DON"T TRY TO TURN IT OVER! Remove all spark plugs and turn it over for ~30 seconds. Let it sit on a dry day and let the water that's left evaporate out. Change the oil. Pop the spark plugs in and try firing it up.
If the motor shakes, vibrates, or makes any loud clacking/knocking, you prob. bent a rod.
Also, a small tiny problem has been known to happen when a motor hydrolocks, but some duct tape can fix it. Check your block and make sure there's not a hole with a rod hanging out.....

Nope, it's acting more normal today..
I took out the plug wires (1 is broken and another one is starting to look like it's going to break) and pulled the plugs out. All were soaked in water.
I crank the engine and WOOSH we have a waterfest! (I have a vid I will post later) The cylinders were shooting out water like crazy... I did this for half an hour and then tried to start the engine.. it spun and spun but didn't crank.. I took out the plugs again and cranked it.. more water coming out.. there was a lot of water that went in! I mean a lot! But the motor sounds like it will start over, and I had my mechanic take a look at it, he says it'll be fine once I get the water out.
In the mean-time, since it's too dark right now... I'm going to finish blowing the water out of it tomorrow.. and change the plugs and plug wires...
LETS ALL PRAY!!!

drained coolant, refilled with fresh 50/50
drained engine oil, refilled with castrol gtx 10w40
replaced bosch oil filter with new bosch oil filter
replaced plugs with denso regular plugs
replaced broken bosch wires with new wires w/ 2 year warrany
Anyway.. so yes.. the car RAN!!! But the valve tap sound I had before which was very slight and never loud or annoying... is LOUD as hell and sounds like it's gonna rip the engine apart. I let it run and the smoke came out the exhaust and then settles, the engine ran smooth, but the noise was horrible.
I had my mechanic look at it and he said that the water must have washed away the stuff on the valves? and now they sound aweful and the car isn't driveable even tho it runs.. but he asked me to get the valve adjustment specs..
http://www.superhonda.com/vehi....html
And he will adjust the valve clearances tomorrow and it "SHOULD" run smooth and quiet.....
:::SIGH:::: this has been a pita, anyone with a cold air intake.. please take heed of my mistake.
And for those of you who are impatient ****'s in jeeps.. honking at the little honda in front of you to attempt to go through a foot of water.... kill yourself!!

I got bad news for you guy. I just went through this on July 24 of this year. I thought I could pull the spark plugs, get that water out and it would be fine. But no such luck. When I went throught the water, I was idling really low; about 600 or 700 rpm so I thought everything was ok, the motor just stopped. Well I got the thing running again but like you said, smoke and really loud clicking. That noise is your rods smacking the side of the cylinder bore. I pulled my motor and ripped it apart and I have four rods that look like Pirate McFreds about 4 posts up. What's even worse is that when you rods hit the side of the bore they take out little chunks of metal that the piston rings eventually catch and, in turn, scratch up the entire thrust side of all four cylinders. As a result: the block is garbage, the rods are garbage and the pistons are garbage as well. On top of that, if the scratches are more than .00010" deep you can't just hone them out or bore it over. H series blocks are Nickel-Sil blocks so it takes a diamond plated cylinder hone/bore to work on them the right way; plus boring an H series block more the .00010" over the stock bore starts to decrease the blocks structural integrity and it has to be sleeved. Its all a huge mess. I just bought another block and I'm throwing all my old parts and some new ones back in it. Take note. If you ever hydro-lock you motor, DON'T TRY AND START IT!!! Accept the fact that you're going to have to pull the motor out and replace some rods and you'll save yourself the hassle of hunting for a spare block and the money it takes to buy one and put everything back together. You do get to make your trashed block into a really cool coffee table though.
you my friend got atleast 1 bent rod...no doubt...sorry to say but its the truth...i got a rod that looks a little worse then the one in pirate's pic right here in my hand i just pulled out one of my buddies h22 that went threw a puddle....look for a new motor...
