Engine Chip
Something I have always wondered about chips for ECU's and ****
I know it's for vtec timing, however I don't drive a vtec car; h23, what does a chip even do and where could i get one and would it work for an h23
My friend chipped his e30 bmw and it helped him quite a bit, a huge pull from before
Let me learn some more please

chips are garbage.
a real CHIPPED ecu's sole purpose is to place a basemap which was created by a tuner, in order for you to safely get to your nearest tuner so they can make the map TUNED for your engine. Do not get a chipped ecu unless you plan on someone physically connecting their laptop to your car and making changes in real time or on a dyno.
these chips you see on ebay are garbage. chipped ecu's are NOT tunes. They are at best a guess which will make the engine run decent.

No, it's not just for VTEC timing. All a chip is capable of doing is adjusting timing and air/fuel maps for the most part.
Anything you find for a Honda ir probably garbage like 98vtec just said.
Has you friend dynoed his BMW? You can say you felt a 'huge pull' but it can very easily be in your head.

I mean because i've raced him before he had his chip and it was pretty bad and after he got the chip he could keep up better
He spent quite a bit on it however, i think it got it from bavarianmotorspots.com

Ok, yeah that's probably a 'good' chip then. No one really makes stuff like that for Hondas, we can get things like Hondata, Crome, Neptune, etc to let us modify the ECU on our own. It lets you adjust everything yourself so it's a lot better than a chip someone else made with a static program.
I know that BMW crap is $$$$$$$$$$$, my dad just paid $500 for a little trunk lid spoiler for his '04 5-series

Not unless you have a lot of modifications would a retuned ECU gain you very much. You could advance the spark and lean the fuel a bit, maybe get 3 or 4 more horses out of a stock motor, but at the expense of reliability. I would say you need I/H/E at a minimum before you should consider getting tuned.
