WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

You can't just swap an ecu in a 98...the immobilizer has to be reprogrammed.

no no... from my experiences just a week ago (which I believe I am remembering correctly), the ECU needs to be reprogrammed, the Immob unit will be fine as long as he has the keys that match the immob unit. He needs the red key for the immob unit to unlock and reprogram the ECU.

If you get a new ECU and dont' have the keys for the immob unit currently in the car, then you need to get the new immob unit which also comes with a set (1 red and 1 black IIRC) of matching keys that work with the immob unit, and then you use that red key to prorgram the ECU.

I'm just damn glad Honda came out with the T5 keys because all that key matching this matching that stuff is a pain in the ***.

Since you're replacing the ECU anyway, you could convert to OBD1 and run a P28 with Hondata's piggyback ECU system. Its a fraction of the cost of a standalone engine management system (I'm assuming thats what you were referring to when you said "aftermarket ECU". Check out hondata.com.

i had my tranny rebuilt 6 months ago...and recently i've been hearing a whinding sound well in SS mode ...so i brought it to my tranny place where they rebuilt it and they told me it was a bearin that had went bad so they replaced it for free since its under there warrantee...but after i got it back i dunno if it was coincidence or wat not...but my fuel cuts off at 68oorpm then my rev limiter kicks in and wont let me pass it....at the same time my vtec didnt feel like it was strong at all...so i brought it back to them and they cant find why its doing that...so i took it to honda and had them look into it and they went throu 5 pages of diagnostic procedures and turns out my ecu is malfunctioning...it need to be replaced...thats the main problem...tomorrow they'll get the new ecu in and raplce it and they're hoping thats the only reason/problem im having and will fix the vtec not hitting hard and fuel cutting off at 6800rpm...ill keep yall updated . thanx for everyones reply .

I second this opinion... I was told the same thing... and instead of forking over the $700 to find out if it was it or not (which I'm sure the dealership would not have refunded if it wasn't the ECU even though they were SO SURE it was)... I used my brother's + his immob.. and guess what? Car ran ok for about 15 seconds and started doing the same thing it did with MY computer.

it's cutting at 6500...your in ecu safe mode...you are throwing codes or something...is your check engine light not working??

Like when you turn the car on, do you see the check engine light briefly and then it turns off?
