From what I can tell they are more just test pipes rather than an actual cat.

Well, first if you dont want a CEL all the time you will need one with the O2 bung on it. I had one of these on my lude and it worked out very well as basicly a test pipe. I was not able to pass emmisions with it but I had the stock cat that i would use for that.

ok cause i have a 1992 prelude Si/SR with 125k miles on it, and i think i only have 1 o2 sensor on it... so tripping a cell wont be a concern i dont think!

about your high flow cat... did you have a 4th gen? and did it make the muffler sound raspy? cause i know test pipes will do that.

that is NOT a catalytic converter.
its a resonated test pipe, though it MAY have a little bit of catalyst material around the edges....
we ran one on my fiancees b18c civic for a while it added a raspy buzzy tone to the exhaust.
we were both much happier when we had it welded in as a resonator and put a real high flow cat in there (carsound).

I also had a '92, so yes you will need the O2 bung on the cat/test pipe or you will get a CEL

That doesn't sound right. All 92-95 Prelude should have only 1 O2 sensor and it's in the header before the cat. So we don't need the O2 bung. I bought one of these eBay race cats from seller aimspot2000. I had to buy an 18mm plug to plug up the O2 bung because we have no O2 sensor to put in there. No CEL or anything, there's no reason I would trip one.

As far as sound goes, it did add a raspiness to my exhaust tone also around 4000rpms. Seems to do it more so when the exhaust is cold though. After, I've driven a little while I don't notice it rasp.

I have GReddy SS Header--->eBay Race Cat--->GReddy SP2 Exhaust

I officially retract my statements.......I guess it's been longer then i thought since I was under a lude. He is correct. you do not require a O2 bung because the sensor is before the cat. I forgot until he stated that he had to buy a plug for his. I had to to this as well. Sorry
