Conversion
I’m nearing the completion of a deal in which I will own a 93’ H22 VTEC engine and 5-speed transmission. It is to my understanding that 93’ was the 1st model year that the H22 VTEC engine was available in the Prelude. Does anybody know of any inherent problems with this drive train? I’m planning on doing a full swap into my 93’ Si H23 w/automatic transmission. Any tips or hints for the conversion would also be much appreciated. Thanks.
The h22a1 was first available In the states in 93, but it was offered on the 92 preludes in japan.
As far as "inherent problems" you may want to change the auto tensioner to an h23 manual tensioner. You already have all teh parts needed on your h23. Do a search for auto tensioner in the archives and you will find plenty of info on this problem. There is also a write up for the conversion in the FAQ thread.
As far as tips, there are a few maintenance items you should address while the engine is out. Replace the timing belt, balance shaft belts, oil pump and water pump. There are kits available in the sponsors classified. ( prostreetonline ). You should also inspect all the gaskets and seals and replace as needed.
I would also change (at least) the clutch, and possibly the flywheel if you can afford it. I would also get a hondata intake manifold gasket. They are only 60.00 and the gains are undeniable.
If you are performing the swap and have questions about the install do a search and you will find plenty of info. It is probably the most frequently discussed topic in this forum.
Good luck
