CEL code 71 help .. Bizarre
I have a 5th gen (98) lude base model that ran CEL 71-random misfire cylinder 1 after an EGR and port cleaning to clear CEL 80. What I've done since.. Checked for vacuum leaks- found none, changed plugs twice, dizzy cap and rotor, ignition coil and wire to dizzy. Checked spark thru wires and all good. Basically checked for dead or dying cylinder. Changed 1 injector and swapped through out all cylinders.. All good.. Took to Honda for diag. Honda said swollen timing belt and timing off a tooth from prev balance shaft seal leak. Honda replaced timing and balance shaft belts adjust timing replaced bal shaft seal and retainer as well as crank and bot cam seals. Honda also checked compression and valves.. All good and gave back lude.. I drove 10 min and CEL coded 71 again.. Took back to Honda and they stated EGR ports must be blocked.. Had ports cleaned again cleared code and still coding.. Can anyone share insight pls ??
did you check to see if your actual EGR is properly working. take it off and clean it with carb cleaner and allow to dry standing up for 20min. i had the same problem with my 01 integra and it fixed the same code youre getting.
make sure the ports were cleaned out right, pulling port plugs and digging in there with some carb cleaner from port to port till you can travel through, then replace plugs
PLUS, people forget to clean from the egr valve itself into the ports as well

Yea.. The way I did them was to pull all ports and remove EGR. Then used a brush in the ports and as far in the passages as possible.. Then used my air compressor to blow residue out the intake manifold starting from cylinder 1 growing towards the EGR.. Lots of carbon build up came flying out in dust and chunk form.. Then I sprayed carb choke in all port holes and EGR hole to let te fluid soak in.. Then after 5 min blew everything out from cylinder 1 towards EGR again.. Repeated twice.. Then let sit then blew out again.. When blowing from one port hole to the other you could see the carb choke( now black sludge) travelling thru and coming out the next port hole indicating the passages were cleared.. That's the system I use to clean ports ang EGR.. Seems very efficient in theory.. Any takers?.. Thanks for input.. Any input is greatly appreciated
as long as you also unclogged the holes going straight down into the runners in each port too, ( dont want to seem like im insulting you, just want to cover all bases, poking straight down through i think 4 of them to the runners seems pretty important too) thats the way to do it
Reason i chimed in, i just had to do this myself, got the "insufficient EGR flow" cel.... So i still remember the procedures, but i think i fouled my O2's and my plugs (too much carb cleaner, lol)

Oh no insult taken yo ... I'm looking for all the help I can get so thanks.. I think I did poke all the way down.. I'm getting to the point where I'll probably just take manifold of and do an extreme clean and see if that works.. I had the EGR CEL but after the 1st clean it cleared that code but now a random misfire is all I keep getting.. Frustration is starting to kick in lol

maybe you opened up the number 1 injector wire coming from the ecu so it's intermittently getting juice...i would compression test and then if that checked out...get a hold of an efi quick probe and use it on the first injector or even a noid light
also pull the plugs and see if the first one looks different compared to the others

Hmmm.. I'll check the injector plug wire if that's what you meant.. Now according to Honda a compression test was done and compression is good as well as valves checked out good.. I'm getting an intake manifold gasket tomorrow and going to pull off the manifold to give a good clean.. The cylinder 1spark plug looks more fouled than the others for sure..
Well I pulled of the IM did full clean including EGR ports again and IAC.. Also before pulling of IM the knock sensor was broke so I replaced that as well.. No codes yet.. Wonder why knock sensor didn't code? But all is well.. Thanks for all the input guys
