Turbo Pulsar maybe... a Corolla, hell no.
More than likely if the cars don't have turbo, then it was some cheesy 2f2f invention from APC or something.
The real "backfires" aren't blue, they're a flame and since it's low oxygen conditions, it doesn't even have a chance to turn blue. So I think it's a cheesy trick.

They probably do it like they did back in the day. Mount a system with a spark plug type device close to the tip of the exhaust, rev the motor a few times to richen it up, then hit the spark button to light the unburned fuel in the pipe. That's pretty high on the rice meter I'm sure...
