which way advances timing / retards? toward the fire wall, toward the front of the car

yes.....advance is towards the firewall and retard is obviously the opposite......becareful though.....make sure your timing is tdc and everything.....also watch out for the tensioner....not too tight.

 

oh i was talking about the distrubitor...

 

dude....just think about it.....

the motor turns counter-clockwise from the driver side....aka if you had an arrow pointing the way it was turning, it would be toward the front of the car, just like the wheels....

so if the dist is turned more toward the front, the timing is going to be retarded, becuase it is taking that much longer for the rotor to hit the pickups....
