Backfiring problem
Recently just got my h22a put back in my car after doing some engine overhaul including new head gasket, IM gasket, new clutch and flywheel, and new timing belt. Ever since I put my motor back together it has been backfiring like crazy under hard acceleration. Sounds like a car that is shooting a fireball out the exhaust between shifts. I am using a gutted cat(off road use only). Not sure why it is doing this. I have perfect compression all the way across and the car runs fine except for my ignition control module is going bad again. ( gets no spark on start up and other times does). Anybody know why? Please help thank you!

hmmm, I'm not really sure what I'd start with
in all seriousness, an H22 w/ no cat will shoot fire on upshifts...

It happened to me last year in the beginning of the summer. Started off by not starting every so often and gradually getting worse...Stalling when I was driving ect. untill it wouldn't start back up at all. I tried to fix everything that had a possible effect on spark, and after that not fixing anything for some reason I decided to change out the ICM in the distributor. I had a dx distributor laying around so I swapped them and it magicly worked. But thats not my worry, its the backfiring....sounds like **** and it happens between every gear during hard acceleration

backfiring could be cause because of your gutted catalytic converter. did you replace the rotor button on the inside of the distributor. when honda does a tune up: new plugs and rotor button on the inside of the dis. are swapped with new parts. Just my 2 cents...hope it gives you some insight.
BTW: my exhaust set-up is 2.5" from the flex into a glass pack, no converter, all back into a universal muffler. Under hard acceleration I too experience a little popping, but that is because of my free flowing exhaust, so a gutted converter could be producing the same effect.

Thanks for the input, I think it is the cat as well but i wanted to know what others thought. I am running 2.5 inch n1 catback with a gutted cat.
Full tune up was done on it at the time of this problem about 8 months ago. New cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and ignition coil were installed.
mine shoots out flames on upshifts. i had gutted cat as well too, and greddy power extreme exhaust system along with dc sports ceramic header.
it is because of the rich unburnt gases get trapped in the exhaust piping like in the gutted cat when you let off the gas pedal at high rpm when you upshift, then hit the gas again and the hot gases come out and ignites the trapped fuel, and sends out a nice flame!

Yea, min does it too, but sometimes REALLY LOUD (you can feel some off them in your back
) It is as stated above due to the cat. Is your EGR hooked up? this will cause more unburnt gases to get built up, like in my case. I actually like the way mine sounds sometimes, it's bad ***
