auto trans help
Well, I'm broke, and my trans is dead. (97 prelude, base, auot) It only gets first and second gear, and only stay in gear when I use the tiptronic to keep it there, and sometimes, it won't even catch 1st at all, so I sit at traffic lights begin a dumbass. Needless to say, it's in the garage now, and I want to work on the transmission. I'm a smart guy, but don't have a lot of experience with cars. So, I need your help. I have a chilton manual, and I'm trying to follow it, but the directions are short, and meant for someone who knows what each and ever single thing under that hood is.
Specifically, I'm steps six and nine: Disconnect the connector from the vacuum tank and remove the vacuum tank and tank bracket (not the tube) and Disconnect the lock up control solenoid valve and the shift control solenoid vale connectors.
basically my plan here is to use some of my own muscle and time to pull the tranny out, bring it to a shop, and have them fix it, then put it back in myself. If anyone has done this job before, I'd love some help and advice.
Also, if you happen to live in the jersey area, and would like to make some extra money, I'd be glad to pay you to come over and help me take this out.
THanks!!

No shop will be able to fix it. You need a remanufactured transmission. One from Howard Engineering would be your best bet, any transmission shop should be able to order one for you (they do not sell to the general public).
well, thanks. that's good to know that I don't have to waste my time/money on rebuilding it. But still, any advice on getting it out? I could use a little help
I keep reading a lot of automatic transmission problem posts like yours, and they're all missing one critical element..... What did you do to diagnose the problem as a failure??? Are you sure there isn't something wrong which is much simpler than a rebuild???
I don't doubt that replacing the transmission will make the problem go away, but I sure hope your diagnosis is accurate because your current plan of attack is going to cost you some money.
