Advice needed UK
Hello there,
I am new to the site and from the UK - I have just bought a 5th generation Prelude 2.2vti (manual). The car is a 1998 on a R reg., I am very happy with it but have a query. I bought it on the understanding that it had 197bhp like all the car guides suggest but have just found out from Honda that all the pre 1999 vti's have only 186bhp as they used exactly the same engine as in the 4th gen Prelude 2.2vti and the engine was only factory uprated to 197bhp in 1999. So... this means mine's only 186bhp - bummer.
Does anybody know what Honda did to the engine to extract that extra power? I'm hoping it wasn't anything too major so that I can get it done reasonably cheaply to get the extra 11bhp. I know that I could probably achieve this with a new manifold, exhaust system and air filter but I don't want the car to sound too loud. So if it's just a case of getting new cams fitted I would probably rather get Honda to do that instead.
OK, any info/help will be greatly appreciated!
Cheers people,
- Guy

The following list are the differences between the 185 and 197bhp motors. This is from the hondarevolutions forum and I'm pretty sure it's correct but don't take it as gospel.
Differences:
- Air intake ducting/filter housing (same as Type-S),
- Camshafts with increased lift,
- Catalytic converter is a larger size,
- Type S pistons giving a higher compression ratio(11:1 instead of 10.6:1),
- Enlarged throttle body from 60 to 62 mm,
- Exhaust manifold / down pipe,
- Exhaust piping has an increased bore of 57 mm instead 51 mm,
- Flexible pipe before the catalytic converter is shorter,
- Optimised ignition and injection timing,
- Valve seats readjusted from 60 to 45 degrees,
- Last but not least, the valve cover is red instead of black
A lot for 12bhp but the last few bhp are the hardest to get.

Wow you really now your stuff!
Thanks very much for that; sounds nice and easy to do then... just a couple of screws... DOH!
hmm not too sure if I'll do anything to it like that, might go with the type S filter and put a sports manifold and full exhaust on it. Not sure about the cat though, this might need to be enlarged as well as they usually strangle a fair bit of power out of the engine don't they? maybe I could get hold of a type S one. Don't think they did the Type S in the UK though (I could be wrong though).
You can probably tell I'm a newbie - don't really know that much about Hondas, and what I don't know I usually make up HA!
OK, well thanks again dude!

PS. I've been thinking of joining Honda Revolutions but it seemed a bit expensive - maybe I'll just go for it.
