4WS question
Hey guys, I'm new to honda-tech, first post here, but I'm not a automotive forum newb... I read all the FAQ's and stickies, and didn't find an answer and I searched for 4WS and AWS and didn't really find what I was looking for so if you guys could help me out here that would help. My buddy just recently acquried a 93 4WS SI. It is 4WS right? not AWS?...Anyway, my initial reaction to the 4WS was WTF is this all about? seems like a whole lot of 'nothing but extra wieght' to me. I mean more wight, more maintence(rear axles). But I guess I'm not entirly sure though. My question to you is: What is your take on the 4WS? are we all think along the same lines here or am I missing somethng? is a 4WS a diamond in the rough or basically BS? or are we just looking a negligable weight and maintence? That said, is there a way to swap or convert to a conventional rear end? Thanks fellas.
It's a cool system.......when it works. I had issues with mine, fixed it with the link that is in the FAQ...now it is starting to act up again.
I love it....when it works. It is noticeable. It is GREAT for tight cornering in the lower speeds.
Not sure if you know this but the Prelude was always the test vehicle.....hence the name, Prelude.
If my 4WS worked all the time....I would take it over regular 2WS anyday. However, since it doesn't I wish it was not 4WS. It's now an issue that makes me a little frustrated with the car when it doesn't work. When I fixed it a few months ago, I fell in love with the car all over again. Now it is starting to get frustrating.
It is neat too because it is different. I know Toyota and Nissan had their own versions of 4WS on the Celica and 240SX, respectively. I know the 240SX is the worst sytem out of all three. I hven't heard much about the Toyota Celica's system, though.
On my car, the system is not a simple unplug and go. If my system is not working, the rearend gets a little loose at time. It's not something like the 240SX where you can buy a kit to disable the 4WS.
As for the weight, it's not too much. It's about 50-75lbs.

I have a lude with 4WS also. I cant imagine driving 2WS one. In the city at lower speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction as the front making maneuvers like parallel parking a breeze. On the highway, the rear wheels turn in the same direction. So basically there is no body roll. Its the best feeling in the world to be going on the highway at 90 and going around a turn with 4WS. The other bonus is that it is possible to induce oversteer if u want. Otherwise the car is extremely neutral.
I have 65k miles on my car now. Once in a while the 4WS light will come on. If i just turn it off and back on its usually gone. So far i havent had too many probs with the 4WS. Overall, i woudnt want a 2WS lude after driving this.

well, his light has been on since he drove it home, so thats a bad deal... Anyone have any suggestions on a swap or convertion to a conventional rear end? has this even been done? I know it has, you honda guys do this kinda of ish all the time.
