Default 4th gen vss question

is the gear/shaft lubricated by the power steering fluid? mine is acting up on me after my power steering rack decided to leak. i want to know if its due to the lack of power steering fluid during the month or so i was driving around with a faulty rack, or if its dying on its own.

it works every so often, but most of the time it is dead.

does anyone know if there is a way to check to see if its the gear/shaft of if its just the sensor. im getting a # 17 cel which is the VSS.

thanks in advance.

I currently have this issue but dont need to worry about speedo. If you look on the back of the tranny, disconnect cables if it is a straight drive to see it better. There should be a grey sensor with two screws holding it in. They are held in by some shtty tabs that often break and you can get intermittent problems from the sensor bouncing around in there. If everything look secured i would try testing or replacing the sensor. I just pulled mine out and removed the little helical gear on the end.Thats onmly if you dont want to have a speedo but not let crap get in your tranny. I beleive you can jack one off of any f22a,b,h22, h23 and it should swap over.I think. And autozone wanted $134.00 for a replacement. Who needs a speedo anyways..geez..

the power steering fluid flows through the VSS since the car is equipped with speed sensitive power steering.
