Default Sprockets?

I knew this once but have since forgotten.
What does going up or down in sprockets mean?

Thanks

Basically a smaller front or larger rear means quicker accerlation, lower top speed... larger front or smaller rear means not as quick, but higher top speed.

Also to the original question,

Say for example you have a 15 tooth countershaft sprocket, and a 45 rear... thats a 3.00 ratio. Switching from the 15 to 14 would increase your ratio to about 3.21. One tooth up on the rear to 15/46 would be less dramatic, netting @3.07 ratio.
