Default Security...

What types of devices have you guys used to prevent theft? I was curious as to how well alarms work on bikes. Local shop charges $150 for the brain and 2 remotes and another $150 for install. I have to go back and check out the model sicne I was just quick shopping. Also does anyone use brake rotor locks?

That looks good to me, what do you think?

I mean it has all the stuff you need, not sure about the pager range though.

Just lock the handle bars and use your garage, a pager alarm would be cool but what if it just accidentally goes off...I dunno...there are chain locks you can get. My views are though, if the theif really wants to steal your bike, they are going to take it.

That actually looks pretty good.. remote start! haha nice the range is probably 1/4 mile like every other pager alarm. It even comes with two remotes, i'll pick myself up one of these when i get my bike

Why would you pay anyone $150 to install an alarm on a bike. The longest wire you will have to run is the 12" of wire acting as the receiving antennae. The brain basically sits within the harness where you take all your taps from. The hardest part is taking your seat off.

Yeah, I'm going to have to say that if someone wants to steal your bike, it's theirs. I really don't see a reason for a bike alarm unless you wanna have a little bling.

Make sure you are insured for theft, that's about the only hope you have.

The alarm will do nothing for the thieves that pick up the bike and toss it in the back of a pickup truck.

Cheers,
Sean

Yes it will, it has proximity, and a shock sensor, as long as you're within the range you can go outside and stop them from ******* with your bike, and you can also turn the lights on and siren with the pager so people that are nearby with be alerted.

I'm not worried about getting my bike stolen at home because I'll park it in my garage, I just want to make sure nobody ***** with it, sits on it, and what not when it's in a parking lot.

You never know how many stupid ******* teenage punks think they can sit on your bike and then drop it. I was at AMC Theaters and this guy parked his F4i near the front of the building and all these kids were touching it thankfully I didn't see anyone sit on it.

With the proximity if anyone is within a certain range of the bike it'll beep letting you know it has an alarm, and if you come back 3 times within 60 seconds it goes off.

i think i might actually pick up that alarm off ebay. I like the idea of that pager. I'm not too far way from my bike at school. I could run to it within 10secs of it going off. It would suck tho if it was a false alarm. Better safe than sorry tho...especially with liability insurance.

EDIT: Just bought it off ebay..i'll let you guys know how it works. :D

The alarm is cheap but the guy is super nice about the whole ordeal. He told me not to worry about it not working and that he will exchange it for me no problem. He responds very quickly and is very loyal with his products. Unlike some people that just dick you off when u say the part doesnt work, he actually takes the time to try to resolve the problem.

ok...a prox on a car sucks....

but on a bike, everything would set it off you would runing to chase falses all the time...everytime a leaf blew by, or a bird, or someone walked past it...it would be too sensitive to be worthwhile......and it dosent stop me from kicking it over if a bike ever proxed at me. I would almost bet you would pull it within the first month....

and as a former installer I can tell you from experiance that....who gives a **** if your alarm is going off, people have become so jaded by alarms, I always think its the persons who's alarm it is, setting it off and wouldnt look twice (most people are like that). now if your at home you might get lucky and get outside but anyone who would still be there is a pro and not some punk kid, and is probably got a gun or something and not afraid to use it, so dont be stupid....its a fact of life that eveyone has to deal with.... instead

minimize your potential.....park in well lit areas, use rotor locks chain up to a real bike rack or a light post or something... dont be so flashy with your bike....think sleeper, make your bike less desireable to people to steal.

and remeber bike alarms are even easier to disable than car alarms, since in a car you still have to penetrate the car....

and as for remote starting your bike....

blah, I had an installer who had that..but only cause he had an extra remote start lying around...its just the bling, and compeltely worthless, since a fuel injected bike dosent really need to warm up that badly anyways

well actually, it isnt sensitive enough so that when your just walking beside it it would go off. What would be the sense in that . Leaf falling on it and going off? c'mon now. It goes off when you touch it(tap slightly)/move it. And i dont really care if others can hear it. Thats not why i got it cause i know most people could give a **** less if they hear an alarm. I got it cause it will page me when i'm in class. I can be outta class and to the bike in 10-15secs tops. Also when i'm at a friends house or something, i can know my bike is ok outside. During the nights, its in the garage so its ok most of the time.

Update: i sent the old alarm back and the guy gave me a brand new one. Great guy, great communication, super fast shipping. That guy sure does know how to handle his customers. Instead of just ignoring my emails and pretty much ****** me off, he took his time to resolve the issue.

Exactly. If the thieves want it bad enough there going to have enough guys with them to just pick it up and toss it the back of a truck. Handlebar locks or disc locks aren't going to help that. Insurance is your best defense.
