Default msf course completed... quick question

i just completed the msf course this past weekend.
quick question, do i have to wait for them to mail me the certificate before i can go to the dmv and taken the written test for my license? or is it possible to go to the dmv and get my license tomorrow?
and with insurance, do i just tell them i completed the msf course to get the discount or do i have to mail them a copy of the certificate or something?

I'm in georgia. Completing the MSF course gave me my full license, I didn't have to take any test at the DMV. When I got the certificate I just went to the DMV and they gave me a new license.

As for insurance you have to fax them the copy of the certificate.

i think they will mail it to you. i thought they gave it to me after the class but i could be wrong.

what state are you in?

in texas you have to go take the test and show them the certification card. i faxed a copy of the card to my insurance company for the discount.

it matters from state to state. i knew someone from different state that took the thing they gave them at end of class immediatly and got his license, while i had to wait 2 weeks for mail to come and turn in to dmv what they sent me. and if you hadnt taken the permit written test, you'd have to do it then

i'm in california
they never handed anything out after completing the course. and completing the msf course waives the dmv riding test, so it seems like i might as well wait til my certificate arrives and get my license.
but i guess i was kinda hoping i could just take the permit test and when my certificate arrives, i just go to the dmv and get my license? since i'm assuming that the permit and license written test is the same?

In CA, they will mail you the certificate (a pink little thing...takes about a week to two), which you can then take down to the DMV to get your license, given that you have the motorcycle permit already.

If you have your motorcycle permit already ... No problemo! They'll send you the new license with new endorsement in 12 weeks (stupid lagging CA-DMV).

No m/c permit yet ... You have to pay (around $12) to take the test, up to four times in a year. If it's been more than one year since you've taken the C-class permit test, then you'll have to take and pass that one BEFORE you can take the permit test (they're different tests; be sure to pick up a motorcycle handbook either at the office or online). After succesfully ace-ing (acing? aceing??? no idea...) both tests, then you hand them the certificate.

Either way, you get to choose to retake your picture. Oh, and if you're close to Davis, CA, go there to take your permit test. Short lines, and the people there are actually pleasant (one of the ladies let me retake the m/c permit test twice).

You can take the written test and get yer permit but you need the certificate. Permit is pretty much a liscense though, no freeway, no night time riding, no passengers. It doesnt limit you that much.

what i meant to ask is...
can i just go and take the written test right now, get my permit. and when my msf certificate arrives in the mail, could i just go back to the dmv and show them the msf certificate and permit to get my license without having to take the test again?
i learned what the permit allows you to do and not do, but i do most of my riding at night for the time being.
thanks everyone

I think they're trying to say every state is different. Here in PA you pay $27 to get a permit... If you take the MSF... you automatically get your license.

In NJ I took my completion certificate to the DMV and they issued me a new lisence with a class M endorsement. No need to take another road test

I got my certificate (it was actually a card) the same day I completed the class. They just handed it to me when I left. Went to the DMV the next day and got the license!

I am from the bay area and i actually took the written test before i completed the MSF course. I got my permit and rode around without taking the class for about 2-3 months... once i completed i just took the certificate they mail to you and they handed me the temporary license on the spot... you dont have to retake the exam, so i suggest head out to dmv and take the test.... good luck and safe riding!!

I've heard alot of people just get there permit and never get the full license, even gotten pulled over riding by themselves or what not and the cop let them go...at least here in TX they did...thats what I plan on doing, just getting my permit. Don't ride enough to take a 2 day course

Here in Georgia you can ride around on your permit by yourself but just not at night, highways, and passengers. I've actually been riding around on my permit for 1 year now...its also expired like 10months now. I got pulled over in my neighborhood for doing wheelies few months ago and cop didnt say anything bout my permit. He just told me to be safe and not to do that there. great cop

either way, gonna go get my license sometime this month

hey i'm located down here in the so-cal area, anyways did you have any riding experience prior to your permit, then take the msf course? because i have never ridden a bike yet, and I plan to buy my bike this month and then the course in may, and then be able to ride then, so basically should i take the permit test first? to get things done faster, then ride after i learn from msf? thanks

i would suggest go to the dmv, get the motorcycle handbook, study that and take the permit test. then take the MSF course FIRST, get your bike afterwards.

in texas you want to take the MSF course first, because it exempts you from the driving portion of the test. after taking the MSF, you can then go take the 20q multiple choice test and get your license.

they wont let you take the written test only, until after you've completed the course. its obviously different in other states from what i am hearing though
