Default checking the charging system

this is on my 300 4wheeler. my new battery won't hold a charge, or the charging system is not working. how do i check the charging system? when i disconnected the pos. and neg. wires from the battery and checked the voltage on the wires it was 3.4 volts, engine was running of course. shouldn't the charging voltage be 14 volts?

lol when you buy a new battery im pretty sure your suppost to give it somewhat of a trickle charge until full before you use it. i think if you just jam it in there and give it a jump your gonna kill it. did it come with instructions?

The dealership should have charged it for you. If not, I would bring it back and tell them it's a faulty. Bring your receipt too.

I have had the same problems with batteries for along time. The thing is bike and quad or dirt bike batteries are not nearly as durable as car batteries. If your battery completly went out of charge the chances are the battery sulfated. Also if you overcharge a battery it will sulfalte, and it will not as long as it supposed to and it will not hold the same charge. The charging on your quad is working fine. 14 volts is way to high of a charge to charge a quad battery. What you need is the BatteryTender plus charger. It's by far the best investment i ever made on my bike. The cost is 60 bucks you can buy it online it easy to use, and works awesome. What it does is that it charges the battery to full charge and when it's charged it keeps it at a float charge. The float charge is good cuz it makes it so it doent overchage and ruin the battery like a normal trikle charger can do if you leave it on for to long. If i were you i would bite the bullet and buy a new battery charge it with the batterytender plus and when you get done riding just hook up the aligator clips and forget it when the light turns green it ready to ride. And that way you can leave it in storage and not worry about a dead battery when you go to ride again. A battery will last about 2-3 years if you do it right.

i did a check on the system and everything checked out. must be a bad battery. is the dealership the only place to buy a R/R? i think i will buy one just for insurance purposes.
