Look at the first 2 pages of threads. Almost half the threads talk about this topic.

start off with a used good running low cc bike.
My friend thought since he rode a dirt bike for 5 years he could take a CBR 900RR but it ended up his taking his life instead. I wouldnt suggest starting with anything to powerful.I started riding a few months back on a 250 and for a beginer it has plenty of power to start out with.but thats just my .02

What do you guys think of an F4i as a first bike? Or would a GSX-R, or R6 be better? How cheap do you guys think these could be found for? I know its a very noobish question, but i'm fairly new to the bike scene and would like good info before i kill myself . BTW, I'm 5'4"-5'6", 130 lbs. Thanks guys!!

Any 600cc bike is a good starter bike. As far as your height, weight, and common sense, sit on the bike you wish to buy and see for yourself. If you can reach the floor and the handlebars then you are fine.

a new 600 supersport bike is not a good beginner bike. look into an older model 600, decent beginner bikes are Kawasaki ZX6E, Yamaha YZF600R (not R6), Suzuki GSX600 (Katana, not GSX-R) if you MUST have a 600. Even an older F2 or F3 would work. However, peep this action:

Having said that... the friendliest 'new' 600 would be an F4i, and you can find 2001 models for 5-6k

I'm 5"7 ,140lbs and i was tip toe on my friends gixxer. The three bikes above are relative the same heigth. I want one of the 3 for my first bike too, but i think I'm gonna go with something smaller first like EX500...

Good choice, I think I will too.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys. I know hearing these stupid n00b questions are annoying and I appreciate the fact that you guys took the time to help me out rather than rip into me.

Let that record state that I respectfully disagree.
