Honda says that the peg can't be obtained, and the entire cover needs to be replaced, at a cost of more than $300 Canadian. The parts expert said that I might be able to find a blind rivet for it at a local crafts store, but they only have "eyelets". The unique feature about the pegs is that, relative to the shaft, they have a big circumference contacting the cover. All the better to distribute the force, and make it less likely that some inadvertent force will damage the material.
I still have the bottom piece, but not the top piece. From what I can see, I believe that the shaft is integral with the top piece. In fact, the shaft looks like a pair of legs that reach through the hole, then snap outword to hang on to the bottom piece. This doesn't seem consistent with what I've found about blind rivets or eyelets online. I haven't been able to coax apart any of the remaining pegs for closer examination, but then I haven't tried very hard for fear of damaging another peg.
Go to Lowes or an auto parts store and look for automotive plastic clips. They come is various shapes and sizes. Although it won't exactly match the color and be identical to the clip on the Honda Fit, one or more type should fit and hold.
Look at the honda black plastic pieces that hold your fender liners and front fascia onto the car. They come in several sizes and look like the would work and very cheap BUT black.
@tech8: I will try your idea of going to Lowes (and Canadian Tire). That way, I can even carry the cargo cover with me so that that staff will know what I want to do. I don't want to order online, because I want to be able to see the mating plastic parts, and to get a sense that they are right for the job.
@Caoboy: You described it well, but the top part is the male part, as it has the twin-leg prongs that feed through the material to be held together, and the round plastic piece on the bottom side. I'll go with tech8's idea of visiting local stores because I want to examine the candidate solutions and get a sense that they will do the job. Thanks.
@claymore: I'm reluctant to pull apart fenders and such because of my mechanical unendowedness. But thanks.
You don't have to pull anything apart LOL a simple screwdriver is used to pop out the center section and the thing then can be plucked out with just your fingers.
That is where they are located both front and rear. BUT you don't even have to take the car apart to buy some. Just go to a Honda dealer and ask for them there are 3-4 sizes but they get replaced so often the parts guys will know what you want. I THINK you need the smallest diameter ones.
