Computer connection failed 2003 CRV
New member - I took my 2003 CRV to Honda dealer for check engine light. They reported their computer could not communicate with car. They can trace why but will likely cost big $ and time (same thing). I have shop manual and have checked all fuses. Where should I begin looking for problem?
Thanks

. Your car would not run properly if the on-board computer doesn't work correctly. Try going to a local auto parts store, they usually pull engine codes for free with a standard OB2 code reader. You might also be able to bum one off one of your mechanic friends!
Thanks for feedback SirFerret. I hooked a Actron OBD ll PocketScan to the to the data port and got nothing for readings. Tried with car running and without but with ignition turned on. Still not reading. I even tried to erase any stored codes in the car computer but it does not seem to be getting a signal connection.
Are there diagnostics to run on the OBD connector of the car? The shop manual says nothing about having a connection problem.

A quick Google search found a diagram of the OB2 port. Take a multimeter and test the continuity between a good known ground point and port 4. If that passes, check for 12 volts across port 4 and port 16. Chances are you have a bad ground due to a lose bolt somewhere under the dash.
Almost forgot, you can pull codes on most Hondas up to like 2005 with nothing more than a paper clip. Might come in handy to get the code you need if you can not fix your port or don't want to pay to get it fixed.

Thanks again. Greatly appreciate your advice. I rechecked fuses and all are good. I will check the ODB connector with multimeter tomorrow. I may also try the alternative code reader method you suggested. Thanks for the link.
Id check the wiring from that port back..
Someone in the past couldve used a power wire to run an alarm or something.
Dont ask! Ive seen it done in the past.

The crap that some of these clowns will pull.. tell me about it. This one is for you!
I'm assuming this should be close to your model for troubleshooting
