How to install wheel bearings/lower ball joints (pic intensive)
i agree. i just did a full bushing swap and axles among other things, and finally come down to front wheel bearings, and hubs, the only things left at the bottom of my box of goodies. so i search to see if theres some easy way to get these in, since i have many tools and am pretty crafty if i do say so myself. i also need my car back together tonight. naturally, my hopes soared when i saw this thread. a DIY wheel bearing! there must be a way! then... "lets assume you have a hydraulic press.." "arbor plates..." "assortment of shims"..

looks like im not getting any new wheel bearings in tonight. good thing i didnt eff them up first.

I have to thank you (OP) for this DIY article. Also saw it on hybrids.jp. Totally helped me refurb my CR-V knuckles for use in my Del Sol.
So far, just got everything pressed out. Now, to get everything blasted/dipped, coated and have everything pressed in!

for the steel bars I looked in the yellow pages for a local metal place. they sold me scraps of metal for almost nothing, they even cut to size for me. check your phonebook, call and ask.
I started looking for a tool to press these out of the spindle as well as press them into the spindle. I came across this tool from Autozone (part # 27023):
The rental cost was $100.00. You get the money back after you return the rental tool. I tried to use this tool to remove the LBJ and I got absolutely no where. After getting quotes to remove the LBJ, I headed over to H-T to see what they had to say. After searching the “hammer” it out idea was beginning to sound good. The only issue with that is how am I going to stop the LBJ from moving on its axis.M-

the Autozone tool rental that you needed for the ball joint was part # 27164 - it's specifically made for hondas and their awkward balljoint setup. anyhow the only way I could get it to work is shown in the pictures below.
******I want to add that this part # 27164 says that it's an adapter set used with ball joint press # 27023, however I could not get them to work together because the c-clamp arm from 27023 was too short to fit the 27164 adaptors. I don't see how they say they're made to work together.*******
man this is exactly what I need... where did you get the shims you needed to help the driver contact the bearings and hub correctly?
Theres no Orchard Hardware in FL.
So bascailly:
PLAT STL-SQUARE by Steel Works
SKU # 1133032
is just those two bars that the spindle assembly was resting on?
I'm hoping I can find waht I need at harbor freight.

I've used both #27164 and #27023 on a couple ball joints I've done recently. I have not taken pictures but it took me about hour to do both sides (remove old ball joint and reinstall new ball joint)
i didnt. seemed to work fine. i had some trouble initially with the bearing starting to go in crooked, but as i pressed it further it straightened out. not sure if lube would help this or not.
i also didnt re-use the dust shield. it was a huge pain in the *** and always in the way. i removed it and threw it away lol.

The kit of "honda adapters" has all the funny shaped adapters you need, and the press tool has round collars. If you use the press tool, theres a part that spins in the end of the screw...it pulls right out so when you press the new joint in, you don't damage the threaded end.
The last couple times I've done lower ball joints, I just used an impact wrench on the tool. And if you stick the new joints in the freezer, they go in a little easier.

Hammer and 24mm impact socket to remove. Big C clamp, 2" black pipe sawed into 2 inch and 1 inch spacers with a plate across top to press back together. Freeze the balljoint first, of course. Un plug the wheelspeed sensor or you'll break it trying to get it out. Hope this helps if you have no tools.
Soo lets say you dont have access to a hydraulic press or any of those fancy set-ups and just your average everyday tools needed to do ****. How hard would it be to do this?
I was fully perpared to come wondering why someone bumped this old thread, but I am glad you did. I needed this.
I would like to add, I did a LBJ on my EG Civic entirely with a brass hammer and whatever those pliers are called that are made for that retaining ring. I just beat the **** out of the old one to get it out (straightening the spindle when I needed to), and with the new one I greased up the sides and beat the **** out of the back of it to get it on. A little unconventional but it worked way better than I had hoped.
Great write up!
Also a good note if you don't have a press or any of the tools you can just buy a whole hub assembly off a totaled car (or eBay like I did). They are like only $50 and you get OE quality bearing!
