Fields Vtec Controller
I have a quick question.. does anyone know if i need to have a Vtec ECU in order for my Fields Vtec Controller to activate my vtec??. I have a non-vtec ecu..

Re: Fields Vtec Controller ([626] SiRJKwIcK89Ef)
well, you're going to have to know which wire to tap and if the ECU does not have a slot on the harness where the v-tec wire comes in, how are you gong to know which wire to tap?

You have to have the VTEC ECU. The point of the Fields VTEC controller is to change the VTEC crossover point (and fuel maps, but that's another issue). If your ECU doesn't have VTEC to start with, there's nothing for the controller to change. The Fields VTEC controller doesn't ADD anything, it only lets you change what is already there.
BTW, what setup are you running? It would seem odd to me if you are running a VTEC capable engine with a non-VTEC ECU...

Re: Fields Vtec Controller (Nismo240sx1)
you don't need a vtec ecu
He may be able to use the unit to modify his fuel settings, but without a VTEC ECU there is NO VTEC to be activated!

Of course you need an ecu. The vtec controller is a piggyback mudule. It is NOT nor does it claim to be a stand alone unit. It modifies current fuel settings on a stock ecu.

yes you do need "A" ecu. just like any fuel injected car. now you don't need a vtec ecu. the fields unit will work alone to activate vtec.

Re: Fields Vtec Controller (Nismo240sx1)
You still didn't explain yourself. Just HOW does the fields unit activate VTEC?
Let me explain this more in-depth. A VTEC ECU monitors various sensors, looking for a certain conditions to be met on each sensor. One of these is RPM, I don't remember what the others are. Once all these conditions are met, the ECU activates the VTEC solenoid.
Now lets throw a fields unit into the equation. Let's assume we are putting it on a '96 Civic EX since I know the numbers for this car. On the EX, VTEC is normally activated at 5500RPM. Lets say you set the fields unit to activate at 4500RPM instead. Now the fields unit is intercepting the RPM signal before it gets to the ECU. Once the engine reaches 4500RPM, the fields unit tells the ECU that the engine is actually at 5500RPM. The ECU now thinks that all its conditions have been met, so it activates the VTEC soleniod.
Get it now? The Fields cannot activate VTEC on its own, it was NOT made to do this. All it does is hypnotizes the ECU and tricks it into doing what it wants.

Re: Fields Vtec Controller (spyder)
yes but if your ecu has no vtec to begin w/ then you just don't hook one wire to the ecu. take the vtec controller wire and send it straight to the solenoid. now the controller will tell the solenoid to open when the engine hits a certain rpm point... the vtec controller has air/fuel and rpm not to mention speed meters to actuate vtec... now then if my car isn't fully warmed up and i try and go past 6000rpms my ecu says ohh no and puts in a fuel cut off. now if the car is fully warmed up i can bring it to 7700rpms

Re: Fields Vtec Controller (Nismo240sx1)
Hmmm....I don't know this for a fact, but I believe that the voltage coming from the Fields unit (on the wire you are saying to run to the VTEC solenoid) is not the required 12 volts...

hrmm.....
that kinda sucks now you got me thinking.....does the apex vtec afc work better w/ a non vtec ecu>??? then again i'll prolly swap manifolds and rewire everything

Re: Fields Vtec Controller (Nismo240sx1)
Couldn't answer that one. Your best bet (in my opinion) would be just to ditch the SFC, the V-AFC, AND your current ECU. Go with a Hondata Stage 2 or 3, it will haul ***.

Basically, it is a bog that plugs directly into your ECU via a ribbon cable and COMPLETELY changes the way it works. The Stage 2 removes the speed limiter, allows you to adjust the position of the rev limiter, VTEC crossover point, and shift light point (it uses the check engine light as a shift light) all through a button on the dashboard.
Stage 3 adds a clutch activated rev-limiter for helping with launches and to allow full throttle shifts.
Other VTEC controllers can change the VTEC point and make minor adjustments to the fuel map, but still, if you have it cross over sooner than normal the ECU will be running on the wrong fuel map. The Hondata forces a switch of fuel maps at the same time as it forces the VTEC crossover. The website explains it all.
Website also has prices.

Hey guys.. take a look at this... this gives directions on how to hook up a vtec controller using the non Vtec ecu... will this work? http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/s...tec_cont2.html

Re: Fields Vtec Controller ([626] SiRJKwIcK89Ef)
I stand corrected. From the information on that site, it appears that you CAN activate VTEC while running an non-VTEC ECU. But there is still one problem. When the ECU reaches the crossover point, not only does it activate the Hi cam lobes, it ALSO changes the fuel map to one more compatible with the Hi cams. A fields unit on its own has some minor fuel adjustments, but not enough to fully compensate.

Re: Fields Vtec Controller (spyder)
Well I still have to wire mine up to see if it does INDEED work. Im a little weary about chopping away at my wiring harness. Any suggestions on wiring up one of these? i need some help.

That is complete wiring instructions, translated from the Fields manual (which is in Japanese). Has diagrams and everything.
