Sure...anything is possible!

Go to http://www.dseries.org and ask this question or do some searching - lots of good d-series info there!

Actually...you are so right there. Having done a lot of V8 carb to EFI conversions, the V8 never produce the same top end power that they do with fuel injection. You just can't seem to beat a carb that feeds fuel based on a venturi effect.

Also, another good reason not to hog around the port floor, you don't want to make the short side turn any sharper. A short turn is the radius from the port floor into the combustion chamber. If the turn is too sharp, you get flow seperation at the area. This is why I am surprised there are no Honda race heads available. Raising the intake port you can increase the short turn radius and get a much nicer transition into the chamber, and do so with a larger port.

Hogging on a port is never a good idea if you don't know how your changes will affect the flow. Pick up a 4 stroke tuning book, I have one from A. Graham Bell....lots of good info!

i have a ported and polished y7 head(and complete y7 motor)

intake

exhaust

i think it came out great....its funny cause it almost has a vtec pull at 4500, exhaust changes note and everything...its kind of fun.....but the only thing is it makes me wonder what it would be like with a vtec head massaged in the same fashion...

i just swapped a y8 manifold on, even though its un ported and not thermal coated like the rest of the motor i think it will still be beneficial....but i have yet to get it running exactly how it was with the y7 manifold...it has not lost performance, other than a bit of lag midrange...but top end feels way better....but i think im having fuel issues, goin to work on it today

During assembly? So you think it was a quality issue? Was it used?

The cam was used for roughly 10k miles...I'm assuming it's a quality issue. I have contacted them for a replacement. A camshaft shouldn't just snap you know?

replying to this so I can have it saved.

Regarding the quench area on a y8 head, would it be possible to weld them up at all? That seems to be a point you guys were talking about versus the z6 head. I have a friend who is a master welder, if someone has a blank y8 head to play with I could give it to him and see what could be done. I have never seen the inside of my engine, so I cannot quite picture what would need to be done.

But I figure the offer is out there now, if anyone wants to take me up on it.

No, they shouldn't, but I have heard of it happening when the bolts aren't torqued properly and in the proper sequence. I'm sure you already know that though and installed it properly.

I have to say its awesome to see some people actually giving good tips on the dseries. I am currently getting ready to build a y8 and this is all very useful and relevant information. Thanks guys.

Here is a very good write up on this subject. IT explains why golf ***** are dimpled and not smooth...same reason the deck should be dimpled compared to smooth. Same concept.

That was actually my cam. I did some head work for Mike(Thunderlips), and then we made a deal for my cam also. So I swapped his stock cam into my car and put my ZEX into his head, torqued it all up, and then shipped it down from WA to CA.

Then when I got down there to throw it in for him when I was visiting family, I rotated the cam to line up TDC, and it just snapped. I believe it happened during shipping. I've used the same torque wrench for a handfull of bottom end builds and at least 10 heads iun the past year. ZEX/Crower are being/were being dics about it, so we just took the loss and give out a big F YOU....even though it was probably a shipping mishap...oh well

THe combustion chamber is different on the Z6 and the Y8. The way the A6 and the Z6 are, has a circle combustion chamber and the y8 has like a square style which decreases the volume compared to the z6/a6 chambers.

Here's one of our D16 heads with a welded combustion chamber.

nice to see this tread again.

recently at work the air condition fixer upper guy came in to fix our air condition. i asked him how he could actualli get the cold air ( vents are on the roof ) to blow directly down on the people being the counter. that area gets realli hot.

he told me thats not what the vents are there for. he said that the cold air likes to stick to the roof, and will blow up there and keep moving.

then i thought maybe thats why we shouldnt touch the floors of the intake side, air tends to be on the roof side. so that made me think, golfball theory and this roof theory, how would a head flow if the roof was super slick but the floors was dimpled?
