Default code reader cant comunicate with ecu

hi i have a 96 civic with a b16a automatic swap. i have a check engine light on it hasn`t been on before just yesterday it came on. ok i went to advance for them to read it and the code scanner says cant comunicate with computer, so i figure maybe it was the tool, so i went to autozone and had them check it, but the same thing it cant read the code says cant comunicate with computer. when i had the swap done the guy told me he guarentee no check engine lights. does anybody have a idea whats up here, and how do i check the code? and my d4 light on the cluster isn`t working that happened about 2 weeks ago. thanks everybody

Was an OBD1 ECU installed with the B16a? Click the CEL sticky to learn how to pull codes by jumping the service connector.

Does your dome light or trunk light work?

A blown #43 fuse in the underhood fuse box seems to be a pretty common issue when I've tried to pull codes on various Civics.

43
7.5 A
WHT/RED wire
Ceiling light, data link connector, trunk light

Off topic, but could you do me a favor and take some pics of how that transmission fits up against your frame? There's been curiosity in the past about automatic B-series swaps in US Civics. If you could tell me the transmission number that could also help. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

NOFX. You should read this post. I wouldn't call this a successful swap. It sounds more like a hack job.

JDM OBD2 and all OBD1 ECUs will not communicate with a scan tool. There no USDM B16A automatic ECUs, ergo it will never communicate with a scan tool (which also means it wont pass emissions in several states) You can check codes by jumping the service connector with a paperclip though.

I'm more concerned with the transmission actually fitting in the car than anything else.

Granted. Just saying if they did the hack job with the swap the actual fitment may be one as well. But in any case I think many would be interested.

Yeah, I'm not worried about the wiring at all. I've seen a friend go through automatic B-series wiring in a 5th gen. PITA from what I recall, but not impossible.

But I've always heard the tranny fits a bit tighter in the 6th gen than the 5th gen.

hi yes my dome light works, the tranny does fit tight against the frame, and i found the service connector, i jumped it with a piece of wire and it is saying code 23. two long pauses and 3 quick blinks. so that means my knock sensor is no good? it wont come on for about 20 minutes after im driving, but not all the time. i can drive it for 3 days and the light wont come on, then the next day it will come on and stay on till i shut the car off, then i can restart it, and it wont be on again.

Does your engine have a knock sensor on the back of the block? If so, wire it up and you should be good to go.

hi yes it already has the sensor on the block, and it`s already wired up, it `s been all set since the swap was done last year, the check engine light, and the code 23 just started happening last week, but the light is not always on, i can drive it for like a hour straight with out shutting it off, then the next day it might come on, and if i turn the car off, then start it right back up, no more light on. thanks for your time.

if the wiring from the sensor to the ecu has no cuts, exposed wire or loose at each connector, then obviously the sensor needs to be replaced.
