[FAQ] d16y8 swap into EG chassis 92-95 civic
ok i swaped a d16y8 into my 92 civic sedan.
why didn;t i just get a d16z6 u may ask. well i found a d16y8 for 400 dollors that included tranny, ECU, power steering pump, axles, and a/c condenser. only 70k on it. so i couldn't pass it up.
Problems i had.
i used the d16y8 rear engine mount and it doesn't fit
use the 92-95 civic mount. I just used my stock dx rear mount. all other mounts are the same but u will need the upper part of the 92-95 civic driverside mount because the 96+ are different.
next problem was the power steering pump on the y8 had to be of fittings so i had to switch over to my 92-95 pump. also the d16y8 bracket didn't fit right so i used my dx bracket. U much shave some off of the dx braket to make it fit. and the top bolt won't line up so just leave it empty and really torq down the bottom 2.
the next few pictures are the biggest problems people run into when doing any Dseries swap. they always get the plugs in the back of the engine hooked up wronge, or forget parts.
Intake air temp sensor. not on the d16y8 but on all 92-95 civics. just plug it in and leave it hang.
White plug Green/white strip----Yellow/red strip
Pot sensor. might not be the right name but i heard it called that in a manual once.
not used in the d16y8, but used on almost all 92-95 civics. vac line runs from back of d16y8 manifold to the pot sensor. then to the charcoal canaster.
Yellow/black stripe----red
Map sensor
some are located on the throttle body. every d16y8 i have seen has been throttle body. my 92 is located on the firewall. and my friends 93 is aswell.
if its located on the throttle body try the d16y8 it might work.
if not make sure this plug is connected to your map on your firewall. and that the d16y8 throttle body is pluged where the map goes. either with the map or with a block off plate.
Green/grey dots---yellow/green line----white Grey plug
IACV
same place on the d16y8 and 92-95 some people miss plug with and the map sensor.
Green/white strip---yellow---red
ok sence i have a 92 it already is wired for vtec in the firewall harness.
Vtec wires are organ/blue stripe orange/yellow stripe
overwiew of my plugwires and throttle bracket because some pleople forget the wire order.
Distributor.
2 options.
1. use d16y8 body, and transfer d16z6 guts into it.
2. use complete d16y8 dizzy and guts. and cut plugs off of both and rewire color corditante. and i beleive their is one wire left unused. ill get pics (this is how i did it)
my d16z6 dizzy guts were rusted in, so i transferd the z6 external coil cap, and wired it in.
i used a 91 integra LS throttle body. so i took lots of parts off the throttle body, and had to use the ls throttle bracket upside down as pictured.
as u can see form the picture the throttle cable is at a very sharp angle.
im going to make a drawing of a better bracket with measurements and take it to a machine shop and have them make me a new one so the cable pulls directly off the throttle cable pully on the throttle body instead of haveing it pull up and out.

I read that you can just use your 92-95 dx dizzy on the y8 also. the z6 housing however does not fit. can anyone back this up for sure?

Information is good, but the write-up in itself ... kind of sucks
The written part seems rushed so I would hold up on calling it a "FAQ"

Well considering this thread answers almost every d16y8 problems i have seen id say it is a FAQ because it answers all of the Frequently asked problems
as stated in my origanal post ill be adding more pics and info to get the dizzy problems fixed in detail, and info about my throttle body.

on your distributor you said there are 2 options....well ive had quite a few friends tell me that my cx dizzy will bolt right up to my y8 (im in the process of swapping a y8 into my cx)..one of them told me he used his dx dizzy on his y8 and it bolted up fine...any input on that?

what year is your CX? if its a 92-95 it would be the right obd, but im not sure if it would bolt to the head. if your 96+ u would still need the guts from an obd1 car. or the plugs to convert it.
somone help him out hear.

thats true, the dx distributor also bolts on.
I know this because those d15b7 heads are just like the d16a6 head from the crx si, and this d16a6 distributors fit the d16y8 head, perfectly!
but the problem is the following, would the distributor inside is the same? d15b7 and d16y8? something inside must be different I think.

Re: [FAQ] d16y8 swap into EG chassie 92-95 civic
D15b7 will bolt up but it is position wronged about ,1/8, it's easier to get a distributor jumper from obd2a-obd1 and use either d16y7 or d16y8 distributor for the dx model and run the two wires for vtec and use a p28 ECU.

Re: [FAQ] d16y8 swap into EG chassie 92-95 civic
I swapped a y8 p28 into a 95 civic and the only problem I’m having is the crank position sensor, can I run the car without it . I have obd1 jumper on the dizzy . I know the obd1 head is a z6 but I don’t got that so I can’t use the obd1 dizzy that has the crank sensor inside it . So my question is , can i just run it the way It is or will I damage anything or anything that’s not good

Re: [FAQ] d16y8 swap into EG chassis 92-95 civic
That is NOT a crank position sensor... it is the Crank Fluctuation Sensor (CKF) and is only used with an OBD-2 ECU. This means that your ECU in your '95 Civic doesn't recognize this sensor and it can be left unplugged. No worries. The OBD-2 dizzy has a CKP sensor in it just like the OBD-1 dizzy does.
