i just wondered where the engine code was located on the R and K series blocks.

 

Look down into the engine bay, under the intake at the right side where the intake charge tube meets the manifold. You will see the stamps on a vertical ledge if you look with a light. you will see K20Z3 and the engine serial number on the ledge. I am not sure about the R18 engines though.
