It is not your torque converter...all that does it translate engine rotation to the transmission. Does your engine rev at high/low speeds when driving in normal conditions? When you get up to 40 is your engine revving very high?

Hate to break it to you, but sounds like one of the transmission clutches may be stuck. You could get it checked out by a shop and see if they could fix it quickly, but it sounds like its either time to take it into the shop for a rebuild or drop another one in Have you ever flushed the tranny? How many miles are on it?

Id get it checked out by a technician. It does not sound like a DIY job...unless you want to drop another tranny in.
