I have a Bluetooth ELM 327 from ebay got it for about $10, and use a $4 program from my smartphone to read/erase codes and has realtime monitoring of all available sensors, if you dont have a smartphone like Android you can use a USB version or if you your PC has bluetooth that will work also

I use an Ultra-Gauge. It will report trouble codes and can clear them, and can display a large number of additional gauges that aren't on your instrument cluster. So, it's basically a standalone device that does what martpav is doing with his smartphone.
They run about $70.

I just ordered it on amazon.
BTW What if I yank out the battery cable and put it back? That seems to clear all errors and its free.
