2001 Civic Alarm Question
I have a 2001 Civic LX. When i bought it (used) I was given the keys to it and that is it. I found out the other day that it has the factory alarm installed in it. I never have had keyless entry or a key fob before and I am wondering if I can just go ahead and buy one off of ebay or from someone on HT. How do I know it will work with it? Anybody have answers please let me know. Thanks much!

I had this same problem with my Audi... I went to the dealership and made sure I had the right FCC ID number. The Honda dealership should be able to get it for your car. After they give you that I would just go on ebay and buy one there. You also have to have your factory radio in to program the new key fob, I believe.
I thought they quit doing that in like 98 with the whole radio thing becuase it became a problem. I am not sure but i read that somewhere i believe maybe someone will be able to confirm it one way or another.
Thanks for the info about the key fob. I hope this works....

Yeah, hopefully. Like I said though...I'm not to sure about the whole factory radio, but when I got the key fob for my TT I had to put the stock one back in (a lot easier to do than these cars).
Well it's on the back off the key fob. Since your problem is not having one, I would just go to Honda and they should ask you for your VIN. Just give them that info and they should be able to give you the right FCC ID.

I had the same issue when I bought my RSX, no keyfobs included. I just bought the proper ones off ebay and then there are a few steps you have to do to program the fobs to work with the car. The stereo was a non-issue
Here's one set of instructions for programming the fobs
Notes: 1) Entering the programming mode cancels all learned transmitter codes, so none of the previously programmed transmitters will work. You must reprogram all the transmitters once you’re in programming mode. The system accepts up to three transmitters.
2) To keep the system from exiting the programming mode, complete each step within 5 seconds of the previous step, and program the transmitters within 10 seconds of each other.
Steps:
1) Turn the ignition switch ON (ll)
2) Press the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” button on one of the transmitters. (A non-programmed transmitter can be used for this step.)
3) Turn the ignition switch OFF (0).
4) Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 two more times with the transmitter used in step 2.
5) Turn the ignition switch ON (ll).
6) Press the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” button on the same transmitter. Check that the power door locks cycle to confirm that you are in the programming mode.
7) Press the “LOCK” or “UNLOCK” button on each transmitter. (You can program up to four transmitter per vehicle.) Check that the power door locks cycle after you push each transmitter button, confirming that the system has accepted the transmitter’s code.

Hey thanks all about the responses. I appreciate all of them.
I also just found today where the keyless system is located in the car and on the back of the module it has the fcc id and canada code on the back of it. I beleive this is a way to buy the correct remote that should work. I will try it and let ya know what happens it will probably be a couple of days before i get it.

So i did this to the car and the Key fobs work.... to an extent. They work on the drivers side door. The passenger door is not affected at all. There is not even a sound of the actuator trying to work over there. The lights on the outside do not blink either and the horn does not honk if I lock it twice either. It is really weird if you think about it because it should all work.
Does anybody know if the passenger door is supposed to have a lock and unlock button if it is a power lock or is it just supposed to have the handle and the thing that goes up and down for lock and unlock. I hope someone can maybe take a picture or something of their passenger side door so i am able to compare... im very confused as to why to keyless works but doesnt work....

im in the same boat. now the only way you can find out is call the dealership and give them your Vin # and they will probably be asses and not tell you unless you are there. so just go and ask them if your car has keyess entry then. if they say yes. go to Ebay and buy a key set.. (dealership = RIP OFF)

what did you do to program the remotes?
to program the remote properly you need to put the key in the ignition and turn it to the ON possition ( as far as it will turn without the car starting) once there push the LOCK button and let off...do this 4 times fast...and you should here all the doors lock and it should work for ya....i was able to program a S2k remote to my civic doing this....also i used to work at honda and this is how the service department programed the remotes. hope it works for ya!

That is exactly what i did. I got the instructions off of handaaccessories.com. The drivers side door is the only one that locked when i got to the end. I programmed 2 remotes. The passenger side didnt do anything. No click, clunk, or anything. Maybe i will have to take off the door panel and check the auctuator and wiring to see if it is all hooked up properly. If anyone else has any ideas they all are appreciated. Thanks.
Oh yea. There is one letter off between my remote and the keyless module in the car. does this make a difference?
