Mobil 1 and Oil weight question: 03 2.4L
My sister just bought a used 03 Accord 2.4L w/94K miles, and I am doing some basic maintenance. I was wondering if anyone uses Mobil 1 Synthetic oil in their Accord, along with that what weight oil do you use (Mobil1 or other oils) I know the owners manual and cap says 5w-20. However I was wondering if anyone uses 5w-30 or if it could be used. The reason I ask is 2 of my cars use 5w-30 so I always have it on hand (less stocking), but not sure if there would be any issues with using 5w-30 over the 5w-20.

well with the 5W20 thats recommended for the car, you get better gas mileage when the engine is warmed up, and a tad bit more power due to the lighter weight of oil. just stick to what the car is called for.
anyways how much did you get it for? im also looking for a 03 4 banger automatic.

Thats what I figured, but its always nice to shelf one oil type.
I think my sister got it for about $8k. The one side skirt is alittle scratched up but, that can be an easy fix.

These questions alway lead to a food fight over the "right" weight of motor oil to use in a k-series Honda motor. FWIW, I own several k-series Hondas, and I've used 5W-30 weight motor oils (Castrol in one; Mobil 1 in two) for years. I know that Honda recommends 5W-20 weight oil, but IMHO that recommendation is driven principally by CAFE requirements. I certainly wouldn't buy 5W-20 weight oil if I had 5W-30 oil on hand.

what do these numbers signify or stand for?? the '5'w-'30'?? i know it refers to the weight of the oil, but which number is the oil weight?? also, is the other number the viscosity or what?? thanks.

Both numbers are the oil weight. The multiweight oils is thin or low viscosity when cold to help engine warm ups, and becomes thicker high viscosity when hot. For example, a 5w-30 oil flow easily like a 5w oil when engine is cold. It will then get thicker and acts like a 30 weight oil after engine warm up and that gives it it's heat range of 5w-30.

I know a number, if not all manufacturers specify a 0/5w-20/30, all for emissions and fuel economy reasons.
However one other question, I read in the owners manual it says to change the oil every 10k miles in the Kseries...yikes!!! How often you guys change it?

So is 10K miles as the owners manual specified too long for oil change? I assume the Kseries engine is kind on oil based off of Honda's recommendation.
I am not sure what you guys typically do. I figure at minimum its good to change it every 6months, or I may consider every 5k miles which ever comes first.

Thats what I figured to do.
Kinda off topic, I have nit searched yet, but are Kseries engine prone or known for burning or leaking oil? I asked because my sister called me today and said her dipstick was not reading, which I think 3-4 weeks ago I checked it and topped it off. I just looked at it there does not seem to be any major oil leaks, any oil residue on the head/bloack is dry and I am sure would be common for any 90K mileage car.... I guess I will look into a new valve cover gasket, its atleast a start.

Read this, there's more info there then you'll ever need to know about oil.

I tend to use what the owners manual say's.
I buy my oil at Walmart and use Mobil 5000 or Pennzoil or Texaco, or Exxon. Whatever is cheapest. I have been doing that for decades. 5w-30 or 10w-30 in the Summer.

HOLY **** 5w-20 flows better than water!! I just added a qt of Advance Auto oil for the time being until I can figure out this oil leak, my other thread https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-accord-crosstour-2003-2012-118/urgent-oil-consumption-leak-2604462/ . I am thinking of trying the 5w30 for little more viscosity, less oil burn, etc... NM the slightly lower fuel economy, or emissions BS, you gotta protect the engine first.... burning oil does not help the environment! LOL
