Connect a scan tool and look for the AC request PID. That will start you in the right direction.

I don't have a scan tool. Is that a must? If so what's a decent one to buy that won't break the bank as I try and do all my automotive work

On a modern vehicle, Id say so. It would certainly shorten your diagnostic time.

For a DIYer its hard to say. Would you even understand the data you were looking at? Not likely,in which case any scanner is probably a waste of money. But for what its worth the Autel DS 708 will give you the best bang for your buck. There are newer versions of Autel available, but IMO the 708 will suit a DIYer just fine.

If a scanner is not an option, you still need the right equipment to help you out. DVOM, wiring diagram, AC manifold gauge set, for starters.

I assume you've checked the other obvious things like the pressure switch? Freon level? Try jumping the pressure switch harness and that will rule out if it's bad or if you are low.

My mom-in-law's '03 Accord LX with 114k miles is having similar issue. Another way to send power to the clutch coil to see if it clicks is to pull the relay (the one indicated by the lone snowflake on the fuse box lid diagram). Use a coated wire to jumper connect the female sockets where the relay's #1 & #2 connectors plug into. Those #1 & #2 sockets are the ones that are toward the back of the car. If the clutch doesn't click and you know there's continuity from the #2 socket to the clutch coil, then IMO, the clutch coil is toast (like my mom-in-law's car's is). In my case, for further confirmation, after testing the '03 I even performed the jumper test on my wife's '07 Accord EX (same engine). It clicks loudly, whereas the '03's didn't even come close to clicking.
